Reception game ideas

Hey everyone... Ok so I was on another forum about the dollar dance which I am not doing however I was wondering besides the boquet/garter toss what other fun games can be done at wedding receptions?

Re: Reception game ideas

  • Ditto PP. Games are for birthday parties, not weddings.

  • Awesome music and dancing to it is my favorite game.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • I was meaning more so for me and the groom....sorry i didnt specify.... but fair enough I see the point
  • You and your H will play games at your reception?

  • Yeah... I don't really think games are appropriate here.  *Maybe* if it's a very casual backyard barbecue and you have some croquet, horseshoes, or badminton set up.  But really, I think people can entertain themselves.

  • The only "game" we played at our reception was the anniversary dance, where the longest married/together couple won the toss bouquet.  We didn't do the whole bouquet/garter toss.  I agree you don't need a ton of scripted stuff - start the music and dance!

  • I've seen on wedding shows where couples will sit back to back, holding Barbie and Ken, and someone will ask them questions about each other and they'll have to hold up the doll to answer the question (ie, if the bride is the answer, they'll hold up Barbie). I don't know of any other games that people play at weddings, and I've only seen this done on TV. It looks cute, but it might be really embarrassing if you get most of the answers wrong.

  • Either the Anniversary dance or the one where the B & G sit back to back and answer questions ("who is a better driver" then they hold up something that represents the B or G). If you do this game maybe do it while everybody is eating. Other than that I wouldn't do anything that keeps your guests from dancing and/or mingling.

  • I think any "games" either the guests or bride and groom play are dumb.  This is a wedding, not a birthday party.  As long as there is good food, lots of drinks and great music no games are necessary.

This is actually the game I was thinking of... I heard a friend mention that she had seen this at a wedding and it became kind of funny. Again it was word of mouth so I didnt know how to explain it and it was a while back. Its not like I was thinking of pin the dail of the donkey or musical chairs here ladies.
  • Wow, people are rude..... She asked for ideas not criticism. I have seen games like the one where the bride and groom sit back to back, and it was really cute and kept the mood of the wedding upbeat. It just depends on the type of people you are going to have at your wedding and what type of wedding you would like to have. Remember, you can't please everyone. Just do what reflects your personality.
  • I went to a wedding where the bride and groom played a really fun game (for everyone to watch). The bride and groom had their shoe in one hand, and their spouse's shoe in the other hand, while sitting back to back in chairs. The host would ask who they believed fit the question/ description more. For example, the host would say, who do ends up doing more of the dishes. Bride puts up her shoe, and doesn't know the groom put up HIS shoe. Or who does all the shopping. The fun is in the responses. I thought it was very amusing, and I can see why you would want to have some sort of game in your wedding. It lightens the mood, and adds some joking and laughter.
After unbelievably long speaches and vows, its a nice change.

I don't think this really qualifies as a game, but at a wedding we went to whenever people would ring the bells at the table to signals the Bride and Groom to kiss, the Bride and Groom have a hat full of couples names and they drew names and that couple had to kiss how they wanted the Bride and Groom to kiss then the Bride and Groom mimicked their kiss.  It was actually a lot of fun!
  •    Well games don't just have to be for the bride and groom, involve your guests.  A friend did a "search and find style" musical chairs where 6 people had to find specific iteams in the audience.  They also did a dance off!  It was so much fun and the participants who won recived a gift card.  I was beat in the dance off by a kid doing "gangnam" style. Mix it up and above all have fun, it's YOUR wedding!  For all the haters, since all that you are capable of is eating, drinking, and dancing at weddings I would not branch out into commenting about them.
