When does the unity candle/sand/tree planting usually occur within the ceremony?

I was thinking before the vows/exchange of rings...you aren't "united" at the point...so do you do it after the vows/rings?
Confused...Thanks in advance

We are doing ours after the exchange of rings and vows... followed by the declaration of marriage.

And, we are building a Unity Cross. Expensive, but beautiful hand made crosses. One sturdy one and one delicate one and three nails in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. :)

We are restricted with candles and our venue, so we decided to do this instead. Made more sense because we can display it instead of put it into a box for storage.

I'm doing the unity candle and had the same question. We are thinking of doing the handfasting as well (without the actual binding of hands), but weren't sure when to do it.

We are actually doing ours at the reception. The wedding is outdoors and I hate when the candles blow out. We will light it right before our first dance (the moms will light theirs as they are introduced) and it will serve as the centerpiece on our table.

I agree with PP's. After the exchange of rings but before the declaration of marriage. We are doing the sand ceremony and taking communion at this time as well.
