Fine China Question

Okay, so I think FI and I would be okay with 8 place settings for China.  He agrees with me.  However, after talking with a few married older friends (married 30+ years), they say we should register for 12 settings because some will break.  I was thinking of registering for 10 settings.  Is 12 really necessary?
Thanks!

Re: Fine China Question

  • I would do 12.  You may need more than 10 when you count major holidays with family plus older children.

My mother has 8 and that works for her because our family is spread out.  I'm doing 12 because FI's family is nearby, so we'll probably be spending some holidays with them.

  • My family strives for 13 - service for 12, and one in case of breaks.

I think, however, that we only ever have more than 12 or 13 for dinner, or 10 or fewer. Still, plain dinner plates can be useful serving pieces, too. A plate of cookies, the round cake.

I registered for 13 place settings. Mine's antique, so I feel it's my last chance to get a full set, and wanted to go big. For glasses and linens, though, I only registered for 8, which is what my home can accommodate right now. If I get a bigger home and throw bigger parties, I'll buy a new set. Glasses and napkins are like $2/piece. If I can have 12 people for dinner, I can afford sometime in the planning of that party $72 for 24 new glasses (wine and water) and 12 new napkins.
  • I registered for 12 even though right now my table can only fit 4. I'm hoping that will change in the near future. I just had my shower & only got 1 :'(. Hopefully we'll receive at least 2-4. It's one of those expenditures that you can't justify later if you're on a tight buget.

[QUOTE]10 sounds fine but if you're going to do 10 you might as well do 12.  The worst that will happen is you won't get them all.

  • My mother started out with eight and then bought four more settings to have twelve once she found out her pattern was being discontinued...you could always get more later no matter how many sets you ultimately want.

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I'd go for 12.  Like PPs said, worst case is you don't get all of them.

  • I'd start out with 10.  I know for a fact you can get discontinued items on Ebay if any of your stuff breaks the stores have discontinued them....

  • 12. Sometimes I need more than that. I have 12 in I inherited (and love) and 12 that I picked up as extras.

Look at it this way -
    2 of you and eventually 2 kids - that's 4 right there.
    Your parents - 2
    His parents 2
You probaby each have at least 1 sibling with spouse and 2 kids - that's 8 (4 for your sibling, 4 for his).

so: 2+2+2+4+4 and you are at 14.  Now if you have more siblings, want to invite grandparents, aunts, uncles then you would need even more.

But don't just use it for formal occasions - celebrate special days at work, beautiful weather, when your kids start school, get good grades, have their first  piano recital, play in their first sports event - anything and everything.  Don't just keep it for special guests, no one is more special than you and your spouse and any children you have.

Register for 12, if you don't get that many watch for sales or pick them up on ebay (I've gotten extra serving pieces to match my inherited set), get them from Replacements.com  and then USE IT.
  • You could also register for 8 place settings, and then register for 2 - 4 additional dinner plates only.  Basically, just extras of the key pieces.
