how to tell invitees...

how should i communicate that there is no bar at our reception?  i feel like people expect it and want to very clearly tell them they are wrong.

You don't owe that information to anyone, and don't mention it anywhere in your invitation set - tacky.  At most, you could include it as one of your "FAQs" in your wedding website, if you have one like that.

If people are disappointed by the prospect of having no alcohol -- and they might, let's face it -- I would hope they would suck it up and still have a good time at your reception.  It's not about the liquor.
  • Do not put anything about it being a dry reception on the invitation.  Don't lead them on with terms like "cocktail hour" but you don't need to warn them anyway.  If they really are that concerned with alcohol, advance warning will get them to pack flasks.

You should plan an event that makes sense dry.  For example, you might want to do it at brunch/lunch or not plan a DJ and dance floor, as evening and dance receptions go along with alcohol in many groups.

Does word of mouth work? I can let my WP know and they can tell people who ask.
We couldn't do a lunch or brunch reception becuase we are getting married on a Sunday in a church, so it has to be afternoon. Plus we booked a DJ for music.  I'm not sure if people will dance a lot but I like background noise.
  • Word of mouth works. Is there a reason people might assume it will be dry? I went to an evening wedding on a Saturday once and on the way (OOT wedding) I told my then-FI, "You know, I think there's like a 75% this will be a dry wedding." And it was. The couple was religious and their religion doesn't tolerate drinking.
