Bands & Musicians from NC

For our cocktail hour, I'd like to play an assortment of music from North Carolina bands and musicians. I've got a pretty decent list so far of well known artists including:
- Ben Folds Five
- Avett Brothers
- James Taylor

And some lesser-known bands such as:
- The Connells
- The Embers
- Squirrel Nut Zippers

Does anyone else have any favorite local music to share? I'm into just about any style...rock, bluegrass, R&B, etc. Nothing is off limits. Thanks in advance!

    What a great idea!

This wiki article is a pretty good reference.

Also if you scroll down on this link there's some good ones too.  I had no idea Thelonious Monk was from Rocky Mount.

The Catalinas & Band of Oz are both NC beach bands. Chairmen of the Board actually started in Detroit, but "Carolina Girls" is pretty iconic. If you're not a purest, Hootie & the Blowfish, Cravin Melon, & Edwin McCain are all great SC bands that have played a lot locally. Love "Sweet Tea" by Cravin Melon.

If you're open to bluegrass, The Steep Canyon Rangers are out of Asheville, NC... they're actually the band that Steve Martin is touring and playing with.  They're fantastic!  I wasn't a bluegrass fan, but FH is buddies with their mandolin player so we went to a few shows and I was hooked!

Thanks so much for the suggestions! I can't wait to look into all these new bands I've never heard of.
