Split Ends!

So I have been growing my hair out for about 5 or 6 months now. I used to have really short hair, almost Pixie length. I am trying to grow it out so I can put it up for my wedding. I used to get my hair cut every 4 weeks. My split ends have been horrid since I started growing my hair out. I did get it trimmed about 3 weeks ago which seemed to help but now I am seeing a ton of split ends again! I do style my hair with a curling iron and my hair is also color treated. I know these things all contribute to the split ends. Are there any products anyone can recommend to help my deal with this? Please and thank you!!

Re: Split Ends!

  • Split ends will help you greatly when you go to put your hair up for your wedding.  Because my hair is slippery, my stylist refused to cut my hair for 6 months leading up to the wedding so my hair would be like velcro and stay in place well.  It was gross, but my hair didn't budge at all the whole night.  I had it cut the day after I got back from our honeymoon.

  • You can't heal split ends, but you can do things to help prevent them in the first place.

Use styling products that are intended to protect your hair from the heat and deep condition the ends in the shower.  I also like the alberto v-05 hot oil treatments- they're just a few bucks at the drug stor but really help!
  • V05 hot oil treatment is awesome stuff!  I have wavy hair (bordering on curly), and I like to straighten it but it dries out my hair so much!  My hairdresser turned me onto a anti-frizz and shine spray by StraightSexyHair that also acts as a thermal protector, and it does seem to help mitigate the damage from heat styling.

I also use a leave in conditioner on my ends.

  • I use this: http://www.sallybeauty.com/strengthening-treatment/SBS-124802,default,pd.html?cm_vc=SEARCH

It won't help too much with the split ends you already have, but if you get a trim and use this stuff, it will definately help prevent new split ends from forming. Also, a good leave-in conditioner on a regular basis will help.

Ask your stylist for advice. I'm usually a haircut four times a year kinda girl, but I was getting a trim every 6 weeks for the six months before my wedding. My stylist had me use Redken CAT protein treatment twice a week with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner (Pureology), and she thought it helped.

Somewhat along the lines of what Habs said, my last trim was about a month before my wedding. You don't want to get a haircut before an updo.

I'm now using Redken Anti-Snap leave-in conditioner and a heat protectant (either Redken Heat Glide or Kenra Platinum Hot Spray, depends what I'm doing).
  • I had split ends and a tough time growing my hair out because of breakage.

I used Babasu oil on my hair every time I washed it, before I dried it. It works wonders. Moroccan oil is great too. Just coat the ends while hair is damp.

Use a heat protective spray before curling as well.
Try to limit the amount of heat styling in general, and that will help too.
