What would you Do - NWR -UPDATE

So my friend posted on facebook regarding a cat that needs a home. It's a thirteen year old Calico cat who will be put to sleep Monday if no home is found. The owner's job got transferred and she is unable to take the pets with her.

(My opinion on that is BS - I wouldn't put my pets to sleep just for convenience..but whatever)

I feel like I should give this cat a home - but it's going to cost us an extra 25 dollars in rent each month, plus food and cat litter..(meaning we'd be spending 50 dollars on cat rent alone)

and I'm unsure about how my cat will get along with a newbie. :-\

I'm so divided.

On one hand, I feel like a bad person for even considering the cost..but on the other hand, I'm being realistic - it is a lot..but then again - that's like one less night to the movies each week..one less outfit..and the animal gets to live?

-_-

So - I texted FI since he's out of town and such - and we decided we'd go ahead and adopt the kitty - so I  called my friend. The lady found a no-killer shelter that would take them..and so the Beagle and the kitty are there. She had already dropped them off apparently.

So no new furbaby addition to my family at this time.

Could you also post on your facebook page that the cat needs a home and see if anyone else would be willing to take it? There could be someone else that is more willing to do it.

  • People can be so stupid. Maybe you could agree to do a foster care type thing until a permanent home is found? You can always slowly introduce your cat with the new one. Google how to do it there's some different ways to let them smell eachother without actually being in the same room, see eachother but not in the same room etc.

  • You're not a bad person at all for considering the cost. I think it's pretty awesome that you are even trying to somehow make it work to save a cats life. I actually just had to put my 13 year old cat to sleep on Sunday because he was dying and I was devastated. I don't know how a person could be so cruel to do it out of convenience.

  • Are you able to bring the cat to your place for the weekend and see how it does with your cats?  I'm a huge animal lover and if it meant $50 a month then I'd gladly skip a night to the movies for the cat.

Oh yeah - it's one thing when a pet is sick - for sure, but apparently this lady just doesn't want to hassle with it (or her 9 year old beagle) while she's moving. Ugh.

I'll inquire about a foster situation - maybe that would give her time to get settled and change her mind.

I'm going to text FI later and see what he thinks.

Yeah - and we're already paying 25 for Angus - so it's only an additional 25. I make about 200-250 at the zoo in a week..so once we're done paying for the wedding in a month - we should have the funds. I'll be graduating and have a "big girl" job again by next May.

    Good idea.

I unfortunately can't help with the poor Beagle at all -_- since we aren't allowed dogs.

  • When we introduced our cats, we rubbed them both with baby wipes to neutralize their scent and sprayed our furniture with pheromone spray (humans can't smell it)  We bought it at Petco.

Then we kept one on a leash when they were together and still being introduced.  The whole process took 4 days but it can take longer.

I love kitties too and I think it's a great idea.  And don't take any hassle from Abuela!! With all you do for her and your FI, they should not stand in the way of something that you want.

People make me so mad. I think fostering is a good option, or look on petfinder.com to see if there's a rescue near you that can foster/adopt the cat. I got my dog Penny from a rescue, I follow them on facebook now and they're always doing networking for foster parents.

Oh and to answer your question, if I was in my current situation (3 dogs, 1000 square feet) I wouldn't. But if I was in yours I might consider it. I would work hard to find a better solution first though.

  • I would take in the extra cat and dog probably but that's just me being an absolute animal lover! If the wedding was so close and you lived closer I would totally take that dog.  One of our clients is selling their house and the new apartment they found doesn't accept dogs so I'm kind of on the verge of volunteering to take it before it goes to a shelter, but they are closing on the house the week before the wedding so I'm not sure :(.

  • I didn't read all the replies...but me, I'd take it in. Ummm that's how we ended up with three cats lol First one was off the street, but we wanted one anyway, so free was good. Second we adopted from a shelter because I was dying for another kitty. Third...showed up on our doorstep in March and I cried thinking of turning her away lol

Meanwhile...she just barfed all over the carpet this morning, and has already cost us hundreds in vet bills due to her ring worm, shots, fleas, check ups, etc...and we still have to get her fixed. BUT we don't have to pay extra rent. I'm praying after she's fixed, she will stop going to the vet!

Tough decision but kudos for thinking it over. I don't tend to think things over lol

    Thanks for the tips.

I texted FI - and he seems to be on board because it's breaking his heart to think about the cat being put down as well.  He's a softy.

I'm thinking because my cat is male - and this is an older female - he won't feel very territorial - but who knows.

Yeah - my cat pukes on the carpet all the time too. Drives me nuts. Next place we live - must have hardwood floors for sure. I'm constantly borrowing my mom's carpet cleaner.

  • Ask around if anyone is interested. I would take it in! We have a cat and I would LOVE to get another cat. I am a cat person. We buy 1 huge tub of litter from walmart for about $10 it lasts us 2 months. We also buy large bags of cat food from target also $10 and that can last us almost 3 months.
