I can see how this week is going to be.

Besides being just sick enough that I feel like crap and want to stay in bed all day, but not sick enough that I can rationalize actually calling into work, I just spent 1,100 bucks for my FIL to completely overhaul my Honda and get it in tip-top shape so it would get me through another year or so (it would have easily cost over 3k in a shop, he only charges us parts).  I needed to get it done by yesterday, because he left this morning to go to Seattle where he's got a new job at Boeing and will be living (MIL is moving out there in spring).

And what happens when I'm driving to work this morning?  The check engine light comes on.  F*CK ME.

  • How old is it?  Is it possible that the light just came on because it's expecting routine mainenance that your FIL actually did, but since it wasn't done at a shop the computer wasn't reset?

  • I DON'T EVEN WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE VIKINGS, FISCHY.

He put on all new struts, all new shocks, new brakes and calipers on all four wheels, new seals on my engine (every single one was leaking oil), oil change, new antenna (someone broke mine for sh*ts and giggles), new tire rods, bled the break lines, put in a new brake-liquid-holder thingy (I'm a cartard), new spark plugs, changed the headlight and taillight that was out, rotated my tires, changed the air filter, and fixed the stuck back door that wouldn't open.

  • Well first of all go to AutoZone or some such parts store and get them to run a diagnostic. It's just a little machine they plug into the computer to tell you what's wrong. And it's free :) Here's hoping that you just need new fuses or something!

No kidding, I'm hoping that it's just something little and stupid, and that he wasn't in such a rush that he forgot to plug something back in or jiggled something loose.

I second that suggestion.  And I also second the fact that maybe it's just a reminder light.  OR it could be that your car is dumb like my old car - the check engine light would come on all the time for no reason whatsoever.  Regardless, good luck!

  • Since he just did all that work, it is possible the check engine light is because of a pinched wire or something.  Mine is constantly on now, and it has been checked more than once.  Finally the guy said it was some wire issue between the computers and there was nothing wrong with the car.  Here's to hoping anyway!
  • Well I mean if you really want me to f*ck you to make your week better I guess I could.

  • My check engine light always comes on when the gas tank thingy isn't shut tight enough.  Did you get gas today or yesterday?

  • Nuggs, I'm incredibly sorry your week is off to such a shiit start, but I would like to thank you for the word "cartard". Because I am one, and I've never been able to fully express it before.
  • Haven't gotten any gas, and he didn't do anything to the battery but that does have it's own little light.

Manda - anytime I can add to somebody's vocab is a good day to me.

Oh yeah, and I've offically put back on 20 pounds of the weight I lost for the wedding.  And I'm PMSing.  EVERYTHING CAN GO STRAIGHT TO HELL.

  • Sorry your day is so crappy. I agree with the PPs that said your car probably doesn't realize all that stuff got fixed. H's car is stupid like that too. Once, we came back from vacation and the damn thing wouldn't start. BRAND NEW BATTERY. AAA came out and jumped us and we started to go. Got to the gate to pay for parking and it died again. AAA came out again and towed us home.

Our mechanic fixed it but it died again. This happened a couple more times. Then the mechanic realized that the computer needed a reboot, essentially (I don't know, I'm a cartard too). He did something and boom! the car worked fine. It's like the car forgot how to be a car.
