Too Late?

First of all, Hi, this is my first post!  Got engaged on 12/29/11!

I only just recently started looking for venues, but between my and FI's schedules, and the fact that we're in the Harrisburg area while he finishes up law school, we only have time to do visits on Fridays starting next month.  I'm hoping for a February 2013 wedding, and looking closer to the Chester County region than the Philly region.  But I'm getting nervous that it'll be too late to book anything by then!  How quickly did you guys book your venues, and how booked were they already?

We booked in May 2011 for a July 2012 wedding. We were hoping for June but most venues were booked, so we settled for July. February might not book up as fast.
  • I booked in February of 2011 for March of 2012. They told me someone called the morning I went to visit about my date but I don't know if that was just a sales tactic to get me to hurry up and book.

Can you call and ask if the places will put the date on hold for 2 weeks until you decide? I did that for several places that I wound up not even visiting. They will just call you if someone seriously wants the date and then you would either have to committ or give up the date.

  • We booked our venue in March 2011 for our May 2012. They only had two saturdays available for May 2012 when we contacted them...so i picked one of their two available dates... i've also noticed photographers, hair/make up artists and DJs (at least the well-known ones) are getting booked up really quickly too...some of them i contacted last year were booked already for my May 2012 wedding date...

  • We booked in January 2011 for September 2012 and most of the places I checked out were booking up fast. Then again, Sept is a pretty popular month. Feb isn't, so you should be ok.

  • I booked March 2011 for April 2012.  I emailed all of the venues I was intersted in visiting ahead of time to set up appointments, and I also asked them if they could send me pricing information and their available dates during the months that I was looking.  Then I compiled a spreadsheet of the availability so that I had an easy reference.

I'll also ditto that some photographers and other vendors get booked pretty far out.  But don't get too anxious - there are tons of good wedding professionals out there!  I just booked an awesome videographer and my hair and makeup professionals yesterday for my April wedding.

I booked our July 2010 wedding in late September 2009.  When we booked, our venue still had a pretty much all Fridays in June and July open and about 3 Saturdays open.  I think if you book a year in advance, you should be fine... especially for a February wedding.
