Getting in Shape

Motivation..Or lack there of

So my wedding is 6 months from today..I've lost 15 pounds so far and still have another 25 to go. I go to the gym usually 3 times a week when I can. I have a high stress job and am also a full time student graduating in April. I can keep my motivation up for a few days then I'll have to work late or skip the gym because an assignment is due. I need help! I know that I can get the weight off because I've done it before, but what are some things you guys do to stay motivated?

  • Caffinene lol.

I'm not too much help but I'd focus on the diet right now if you're so busy. You may not be able to make it to the gym everyday but you do have to eat everyday :P

I'm not as much help with a solution but just wanted you to know I'm right there with you.  I recently joined the gym, my wedding is in April and I too have a high intensity job that makes me not want to work out when I'm done.  We can do it!!!

  • My wedding is in May and I've struggled a lot with motivation.  I'm just now getting my life in order so that I can have time to get in shape for once.

They say it takes about 2 weeks to get into the habit of working out.  I think what works for everyone in terms of motivation varies from person to person, but for me, in those 2 weeks I just have to tell myself that not going to the gym is not an option.  It's a required part of my day, no excuses, and it will only take 30 minutes (I usually stay longer but this works for me if my schedule is really full as it's better than not going at all).  So for two weeks its very "black and white" thinking for me -- I must go, there are no choices.

By the end of that two weeks, I usually start seeing some type of results, whether its weight loss, feeling more energetic, my jeans are a bit looser, etc.  Then that begins to be my motivator and I start to enjoy working out more, so that black-and-white thinking doesn't have to be there anymore.

GL!  It's hard to get started and keep going sometimes, but you can do it!  Set small, attainable goals for yourself along the way.  Try a new group class to keep your fitness routine from getting stale and boring.

  • Thanks everyone! I had bought the Bridal Boot Camp book a while back and I have dug it out and I'm gonna do it! Tomorrow is day 1.
  • I feel your frustration! When you really have to lose weight, it is like the whle world is out to sabatoge your efforts lol. My only solution I have managed is to try to organize your diet to at least help u get there when the gym is impossible to get to. Sometimes it just IS impossible. Things come up unfortunately. Good luck!! x
  • i havent seen the inside of a gym in over 12 months :( its sad

im just going to attempt slim fast and/or special k!

  • Im actually trying yoga out since i started noticing the pounds have creeping on and on and on. its just really bad, what the worst thing is that i lost control over it. i would throw a pity party on myself and vows not to eat dinner and then the seconds someone is inviting me to eat i say yes and eat a ton of food.vicious cycle here.

    good luck!
try yoga. apperantly itll change up your diet and make it more healthy.

  • Hey, don't get discouraged. I know what it feels like to have an extremely demanding job, be a student at the same time, and raise a kid by yourself while still trying to manage to lose weight. I noticed you said you got a boot camp book, but I also wanted to give you a couple things to try.

First thing, don't starve yourself, or do anything toooo drastic to your diet. The healthiest thing for you to do is to actually EAT,lol. But, there's a trick to it. If you eat smaller portions, "snack" if you will, 5 times a day, you will help your stomach contract, so when you do eat, it doesn't take as much to fill you up. Personally, what I did was have just one of those little oatmeal packets or an orange for breakfast, then another snack, then my lunch, then another snack, then dinner. Also, don't eat anything before you go to bed. Anything by that point is just going to get stored while you sleep, and you don't want that.

Also, you would be AMAZED at how much just Walking can do for you. Check this out. Before I deployed, I was trying to lose weight. I was running every other day because...well, that's what we do in the Army, and I still didn't lose not nearly as much weight as I wanted to. Once I got out here on my deployment, and I have to walk everywhere I go, I look at my legs now and think to myself "Wow, I haven't looked like that since I was 18!" lol. So, if at all possible, just force yourself to walk. After you eat dinner, take a walk with your FI around the neighborhood or something. It'll burn some calories, and it'll be good bonding time for you and your FI. My mom lost like 40 pounds just walking everyday. Granted, it took time, but eventually, it had a HUGE impact.

Finally, don't get overwhelmed. I know, that way easier said than done, but you have made the decision that you want to make a change, so don't let anything stop you. You are strong; if you are able to hold a demanding job and do college at the same time, that is saying A LOT! So own it, okay? You've got this. ;)
