Any tips for the Bahamas?

My fiance and I are planning to do 5 days in Nassau, Bahamas for our honeymoon!  We'll be staying at A Stone's Throw Away (small B&B) instead of the busier hotels.  Has anyone been to the Bahamas who can recommend things to do or places to eat?

Re: Any tips for the Bahamas?

  • the Fish Fry is amazing. . . . it's a ton of little restaurants and bars in one area.  We went there for beers and food once or twice when I was in the Bahamas.  Order a whole fish. . . I was petrified of it, with the eyes looking at me and whatnot, but it was one of the most delicious things i've ever eaten.
  • Visit the straw market and stock up on the knockoff purses, if that's your sort of thing.  I know the straw market got wiped out by a hurricane last year, but they rebuild pretty quickly there.

Bring cash in small bills when you go shopping.  It's hard to haggle something down to $15 when you only have $20s!  Also, small bills are good for tipping cab drivers. And don't be afraid to haggle with the street vendors.

Get used to politely declining when women offer to braid your hair.  I have really long hair and I was practically swarmed every time we walked around.

Just about everything closes (except for restaurants & bars) around 5.  Cabs (they're actually vans) are pretty inexpensive because you're ususally crammed in with other people, so don't hesitate to take one when it's dark, if you go out.

  • Ditto the Fish Fry! It's incredible! try to ask locals for recommendations on authentic food. I couldn't tell you the names of the best places that we went, because they were holes in the wall and kind of scary, but had the most incredible food.

Be careful at night. A group of my friends was robbed at knifepoint on the beach, I think around midnight.

The straw market is kind of fun.  Don't ever agree to pay what the vendors are asking for. The haggling is half of the fun.

There isn't really too much to do in downtown Nassau other than walking around the straw market, checking out the hundreds of jewelry shops, and taking shots at Senor Frogs.

I would go to the Atlantis for a day trip. I did not enjoy staying there (it is too Vegas-esque and man made for my taste), but I will admit, the waterslides and the aquariums are incredible. I think its like $20/person for a day at the waterpark, and is absolutely worth it.  I am not a super touristy kind of person, but I love waterslides and lazy rivers, and the ones at the Atlantis are some of the best I have seen.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me. I have been twice, one of those times was just this past December, and I am happy to help.
  • Be careful when you're walking around downtown, try and stay in the" touristy" areas. You don't want to turn down the wrong street, there are some shady areas. Like other posts said, the vendors are great places to get gifts but don't pay full price! And try to take a trip to Atlantis for the day!
