Mmm vicodin...

Blah, according to my endodentist I have an extremely tiny mouth and a weird tooth. I went in for my root canal but she could only find 2 nerves when I guess there were supposed to be three. So after 2 hours in the chair (with Dh waiting outside) she put in a temporary filling and now she and my regular dentist are discussing whether they should just pull the tooth.
But she gave me vicodin, so besides the dull ache I'm not feeling too badly right now.
How's theknot going today?

  • I like vicodin, but I prefer percocet.

Consider yourself lucky.  I can't hold down any decent painkillers, including percocet.  They all make me violently ill.
  • Darvocet all the way.  One of those and a tylenol and life is pain free!

  • Have you tried morphine, fentanyl, hydrocodone, methadone, codeine, hydromorphone, darvocet ... there has to be something you can use.

  • You haven't missed much, except a colossolly stupid correlation that one of the dimmer posters made between the size of Kelly Clarkson's ass and her ability to sing. See the Open Letter Wednesday thread. That's about it.

    And yay for Vicodin.

<div>I think darvocet is the only one that has worked so far, but it still makes me queasy.  I have no idea why.  </div><div>
</div><div>ETA:  Katie, I hope everything goes well for you regardless!  The dentist is never fun!</div>
  • Morphine is amazing. My appendix burst two years ago and they gave me morphine and a lot of antibiotics before surgery. I was high as a kite but I wasn't in any pain afterwards.

  • Yeah, my daughter has Lortab (same stuff as Vicodin). She must have a constitution like a bull, because it doesn't knock her out. She's 90 pounds dripping wet, and took the Lortabs like a champ.
  • That it's not, but I must admit this lady was really good and really nice. My dentist had clued her in that I get super anxious (as in I was shaking the entire procudure) so every time she had to do something even remotely painful her assistant would start rubbing my shoulder and telling me stories.

Days like this make me so thankful I'm not allergic to meds (at least that I know of). Dh is allergic to penicilin and when he needed Vicodin for a root canal he spent all day alternating between sleeping and dry heaving. Which will be really fun because he still has all 4 of his wisdom teeth and they are starting to push on his molars so yeah, impaction surgery, wohoo...

Oh, and I am so happy, because the cost of the root canal is a good $2k less than I thought it would be, and if they end up pulling the tooth they will refund me the money. Then the Vicodin was just $2.

and random drug induced thought...I just saw a Jenny Craig commercial and Jason Alexander got skinny!!!

    You sound like a total junkie here.<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif" border="0" alt="Tongue out" title="Tongue out" />

I've heard good things about vicodin but never used it. I got a prescription for valium befor my lasik surgery and I loved that stuff so much, it scared the crap out of me and I threw away any pills I didn't use the day of the surgery. It was way too tempting. But I think I may have a predisposition to chemical dependency; thank god my parents were so strict, it kept me scard of doing anything too stupid while growing up.

    Hope your tooth feels better!!
  • So far its just kept the pain at bay, and while I did sleep the whole ride home now I am wide freaking awake and kind of jittery lol. We'll see what happens tomorrow and whether or not I need it. I'm guessing going to work with vicodin would not be the greatest idea.

Depends on what you do. I certainly wouldn't attempt to say, operate a cotton gin, but sit at a desk? No problem. It might not be your best work day, but I've taken painkillers (I sound like a junkie as well, but I have recurrent and fucking painful staph infections) and worked before.

  • I'm just a computer tech, so in all honesty I could just hide in the corner if I wanted to. It's more the driving too/from work in Northern VA rush hour that worries me. Can you tell I've never had to drive/be productive on pain meds and am totally over analyzing this?
  • Yikes, feel better!  Dental stuff is always sucky.

I looooove me some vicodin.  I got some for pain relief after my surgery and I liked it so much, that I called the doctor when I ran out to get some more.  Oops - luckily, they said no.  Sealed

<div>I would be semi-worried about driving too; didn't the dentist give you any warnings or directions about it?  </div>
  • AC, I spent 3 weeks (I think) doped out on Valium and Vicodin, and traction (which made things worse, not better). I vaguely remember it, but man, I can see how 1950's houswives got hooked on that stuff.
  • Nope, just wrote the script.

So a second pain killer question...my prescription says 4-6 hours if pain persist. I'm due for a second does at 6:45 (4 hours). My tooth is starting to throb a little but isn't exactly in the pain category, maybe a 3 out of a 10. Should I take the vicodin before it starts to hurt again or wait until I start to feel it?
  • Take it before it starts hurting, with food (yogurt is great for that). You DON'T want to play catch-up with the pain; try to stay ahead of it.
  • And drink PLENTY of water. You might want to add some, um, prunes to your diet as well... Sara, your daughter, too. It will make you uncomfortable pretty quick. TRUST me.

PS - Vicodin = hydrocodone. And DON'T add any tylenol to the mix. But you could add an advil or aleve if you need to.

Hydrocodone is the painkiller I have for migraines.
