Merion Cake Tasting

I've got to say that after initially dealing with Isgros I was fearing the worst when heading to my tasting and appointment with Diane the inhouse baker at the Merion.  I couldn't have been more wrong.  She's amazing and the cake is to die for.  She worked with me for about 45 minutes giving me all of my options while also letting me be creative.  I was in love with all three cake flavors I tried.  We finally decided on the almond cake with raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream and then the vanilla cake with orange marmalade and grande marnier buttercream.  Soooooo good and she gave me huge slices of cake to take home.  So not good for my wedding diet.  She understood exactly what I wanted and didn't give me any problems like at Isgros.  She's even making sugar paste snowflakes that will be sprayed silver and glittery.  I'm getting the extra tiers I wanted for a whopping $40 extra....so now my cake is 6 tiers.  I cannot say enough about how awesome she was.

I'm so happy for you girls that you don't have to deal with Isgro's... they really are the worst!  Your cake sounds amazing!  (grand marnier buttercream, omg!)  I hate Isgro's more and more every time I read these posts lol

I'm glad your tasting went well! We are tasting the vanilla cake with orange marmalade and grande marnier buttercream too. I'm excited. How many guests are u having? Does she do any faux tiers or are all ur 6 tiers actual cake? I'm happy everything went well for u. (p.s. Love your shoes!)

Okay you've now convinced me to see if my deposit with my off premise baker is refundable! I'm so jealous of everyone getting to work with Diane!! I think I am going to see if she can do the design we had for the other baker. Even if the deposit is non refundable it's probably still going to be cheaper to just go with the Merion for our cake at this point, darnit!

I am so glad you had such a good meeting and are getting the design you wanted after all that nonsense with Isgro's!!

I'm so sorry you had to work with them.  I wish Diane and come back sooner for you!  Did you know she used to work at The Knot?!  The Knot actually covered her wedding and she baked all 175 mini cakes for her own wedding.

I adore my shoes.....they were one of my big wedding splurges.  I justify the purchase by saying that I'll wear them even after the wedding.

I'm having 175-190 guests.  I'm actually getting all of my tiers as cake since the cost different to have faux tiers and real cake tiers was like $30.  I think I paid $100 to have the addition of sugar paste snowflakes and about $40 to have alternating tiers of cake flavors.  I'm getting a complex huge cake for under $200.  Perfect for me!

Hey!  I would email Diane first since I think your cake has to be done in fondant right??  THat is an additional cost.  I like the fact that she makes the cakes on sight so they don't have to travel.  I'm also more than in love with the almond cake.  Its in my fridge right now and its killing me not to eat it for lunch.

    I love almond-flavored anything..

How much further after your regular tasting did you have your cake tasting?

Cool!  I wonder if piping will be extra... I want to see if they can pipe flowers on it to match the design on my dress...

=) I haven't had my food tasting yet.  The one time we were scheudled they canceled due to not enough people going.  I think we might be going 11/17.....but if FI gets called into work then they are going to have to set up a private tasting for us.

Aprovencher - What was your original tasting date? They tried to cancel ours for the same reason but we had moved too much around and my FI is OOT and so we wouldn't cancel. We ended up having a private tasting.

The 6th of October.  Was that your date?  If so that pisses me off.  We had moved around a lot too.  I told them if 11/17 doesn't work out they will have to do a private tasting almost immediately because my FI's work schedule keeps getting too jumbled.  Who is your coordinator again?

I'm in law school so I have very limited free time so I was really annoyed when they canceled on the 6th.  I'd moved around a study group and FI had taken off work.

Wow. That stinks...that was our date. We could have met face to face! I don't understand why they cancel tastings anyway for lack of ppl. We just weren't going for it. (Esp b/c we had 8ppl ourselves who all re-arranged to be there)I definitely think our experience was a little different from others who have posted (we didn't have any appetizers or dessert)but that's ok...i'm moreso happy to have it done. BTW I can totally relate to the law school/lack of time issue. FI & I met in law school. What year are u? How are u juggling the wedding and honeymoon with school? I'm guessing it's during winter break?

I'm a 1L.  I just finished my MBA though.  Wedding planning and school is insane.  We're actually not going on our honeymoon till March over my spring break.

Wow, quite a few Merion lawyers!  How funny... I finished law school a few years ago myself, it can be really tough!  Good luck!

I had my cake tasting at the Merion last night and Diane was great! I was 100% convinced we were just going to get a all vanilla buttercream, but I had to pick a second flavor, so we randomly said vanilla with strawberry jam and almond buttercream. The second we tasted it, we immediately picked to do the entire cake that way - it was fantastic! Diane is doing shamrocks in fondant all over, and the charge was $60 extra, which was reasonable. She recommended 4 tiers.

ANother friend of mine, who is also in law school, is getting married at The Merion in March.  She;s in the Palace ballroom.  Apparently lawyers like The Merion!

Charley.....what dinner choices did you decide on?
  • edited December 2011
@aprovencher - We aren't 100% yet but I think we are going with the Stuffed Flounder, Champagne Chicken, & the Chateaubriand. The only thing is that we didn't like the sauce that was on the chateaubriand. I want to talk to the Merion about what other options there are for the sauce.

What are you tasting? (FYI when we went for the tasting there was a new menu again so if you haven't seen it you may want to check it out before your tasting)

@ Lisa - That cake sound yummy. Good choice.  How many guests do you have? I'm kind of hoping to get a 6-7 tiered cake even though I only hope to have like 200-210 guests.

That's the number of guests I told her, between 205-210.  Someone else on here mentioned that she got extra tiers for only $40 extra though, so you should be able to get exactly what you want for cheap!

I can't believe this is only 2 weeks away for me, and I still feel like I don't know what's going on! haha
