HATE counting calories

Are there other methods that people find helpful that doesn't include tracking everything you put in your mouth?

  • Yeah, I think everyobne hates counting calories, but there's really no reason to have to do it.  You have several alternatives.

Personally, I think that if you (a) stick with wholesome foods, pad your diet with lots of fruits and veggies, avoid "junk", etc. and (b) learn to listen to your body and obey signals of hunger, thirst, and sateity, you don't need to tally every nutrient.  Your body will do the work for you.  Do some reading on "intuitive" or "normal" eating to get a sense for it.  Here's a good link:

If you do find yourself wanting a little structure, piggyback off of somebody else who's already done the adding for you.  Follow a plan like Weight Watchers (or SparkPeople for free) and don't worry about it any further than that.

Also, keep in mind that the longer you do it, the easier it gets.

    Good luck!
  • I agree it gets easier the more you do it - especially with things like my fitness pal that save your recent and frequent foods and you can also create and save entire meals. I have been using it for a few months now and have saved my most common meals which makes it super simple. If I change one item up I just add the meal and switch it. At the beginning it tool forever. Also, if you can keep it I'm check without using one than go for it - I just know it really helps me not only not eat too much but also to make sure I'm actually eating enough.

  • I hate counting calories as well.  But there are some on-line programs that will track your calories for you.  I think that fitday.com does?

YOu still have to do the inputting and tracking though.  There's no program that knows what you put in your mouth every day.

Wouldn't that be a dream come true?

Calorie counting is a pain but it really does get easier as it becomes second nature.
  • Myfitnesspal is really easy. I was doing good with it for awhile about a year ago. If you have an iphone there is an app and it is very easy to use.  It also has a scanner so you just scan the barcode on a food item and it automatically put the calories in there for you. You just have to adjust the servings. Good Luck!!

I have to work on counting my calories also.
  • I don't hate counting calories, but I don't particularly enjoy it, either. Although he urges me to count calories, my personal trainer advised me to look at all my meals and snacks like this:

50% of the meal/snack should be vegetables (I often include fruits, too).
    25% should be protein.
25% should be healthy carbohydrates IF you have just worked out in the last few hours. If not, then you don't get this 25%.

This is the model that I try to stick to, not that I do it perfectly by any means, instead of obsessing over calories. It has been very successful! Just something to try as an alternative :)
