Makeup Horror

Good morning ladies :-( I went and had my makeup trial last night around 7pm (didn't give me alot of time to wear the makeup and see how it lasted) at an Aveda salon....which I didn't realize was that different from a normal salon.  I've never had my makeup done before and I barely ever wear makeup (because I'm self conscious about how well the foundation matches my skin, how well it looks, blah blah) and the first try she did I almost burst into tears. My MOH said it looked fine, but my lips were really dark and I looked like I had raccoon eyes after I had told her I really wanted a natural look.  So she lightened the eyes and chose a different lip color and though that was better, I still wasn't very happy with how it felt and looked, I thought it just accented all my bad features and not my good ones. Then I went home and took some pictures so I could see how it photographed and I took it off because my eyes were starting to hurt and then took a shower. I got out of the shower and my face itched like CRAZY (not my eyes or my lips, just my neck and cheeks) and that's never happened with me with makeup before, so now I'm nervous about even having the salon do it even if I was more satisfied with the look because I'm afraid I'm allergic.  Really bummed, I thought I had this all lined up and would be done, but now I'm even nervous about having them do my hair because what if I react the same way with the hair products??

  • I completely understand your worry and I'm so sorry it wasn't a great experience for you.

I think an allergic reaction could have definitely been the cause of the itches! Did you develop hives or anything? You may want to try a different salon and MAU to make sure this doesn't happen on the day-of. What a stress factor.

  • You may want to try someone else.  Make sure they use a different MU.  I went to the Clinique counter to try on MU.  She put some eye shadow on and a few minutes later my eyes started burning.  I took it off but i still bought a foundation.  I return that about 2 days later when the same thing was happening.  They tried to say that it allergic reations shouldn't happen since they are "hypo-allergenic" but I obviously couldn't wear their MU.

  • No hives, but as I was laying in bed about to fall asleep I realized I was itching my face in various spots, which is not normal for me at all, I don't even have dry skin. A nice cold washcloth on my face for awhile calmed it down, but it has me worried.

I'm thinking about going to a Mac counter to see if they can either help me pick out products so I can try myself or see if they could work me in on my day of (my date is a Sunday so it's been tough to get a salon that's open early enough or open at all).

Aveda is supposed to be 'all natural' which also bugged me a bit, honestly, I couldn't care less if it is on my wedding day, I'd rather it look nice and last all day and they said it wouldn't wear long and the mascara wasn't waterproof because of it being all natural. So that was a bit of a disappointment :-(

I only know of two in my area and one got really poor reviews and the other I tried to contact and never heard back from :-S

  • I can't wear liquid makeup, I do the same thing you just described.  When you go to have your MU done for your wedding day just tell them you can't have foundation.  Mine started out just itching but now my face will actually swell from foundation.  I even did airbrush once and it itched like crazy.

What about using a company like Mary Kay? They could do make up trials, do your make up for the big day, etc.  Since they are in business for themselves, they're going to give you 100% attention and they want you to be 100% satisfied.  Sometimes you really don't know who you're getting when you go to a make up counter.
  • I'm in the Toledo area too, I'll ask around and see if I can find some more.  I do know a ton of Mary Kay reps, but if you'd rather go with a salon make up artist I'll look for that too.  It's October 14th, right?

  • I'm not having a MUA because I'm allergic to two minerals that are found in almost every makeup out there right now - bismuth oxychloride and mica.

These are both metals, which are supposed to give that brightness and shine in makeup, but if you're like me, and you have any metal allergies, this is why you would have broken out.

  • The funny thing here is that I've used drugstore brands and never once had a problem, it seems the high end or 'natural' makeups are the ones I have issues with. I've used Revlon, Almay and long ago, Jane, and never have had any troubles, so I'm thinking it's because of the plant derived ingredients.

Our date is October 14th, if you can find anyone I'd be grateful, at this point I'm feeling like I'll end up finding some makeup I like and just practicing to do it myself! />_<

  • This is a friend of a friend of mine.  When I asked my friend she immediately gave me this http://www.facebook.com/chebella.mua.9

I can't personally vouch for her, but it may help to call her and maybe set up a trial and see if you like how she does your makeup.  Plus she could probably give you more options on brands since she's not tied to what a salon is contracted to carry.

  • I used to work for an Aveda salon and it's odd because all there products are supposed to be 'all' natural. I would totally go to another place and have them use a different product of make up. Good luck.

  • I use an Aveda salon for my hair, and I've never had a probelm.  I love their products! I've never used their makeup though.  I have very sensitive skin and the only makeup I trust is Clinique.

This is funny, because I'm the same way!  I can pretty much only use covergirl!!  I swell up from clinque and mary kay.

  • Just called and booked an appointment with the M.A.C. counter, I hope this one goes better than the Aveda does...especially since it's a few hours before my bridal shower :-X

  • If you aren't used to wearing a lot of makeup, I would stay away from the MAC counter.  I like makeup and I'm comfortable wearing a darker eye, but sometimes they are too  much for me.  The good thing about MAC is that if you go Mon-Thur, they don't require you to purchase anything for them to do your makeup.

If I were in your situation, I would go to Sephora.  They will give you samples of anything you'd like to take home and try on your own.  Then I would practice doing my own makeup.  I wouldn't want to risk having some sort of allergic reaction if the MU used something by accident.  Doing your own makeup will insure that your makeup, brushes, applicators, colors, and everything else are clean and what you need/want.
