Running w/plantar fasciitis

I really want to run. I've been trying for a while now.

I started the C25k this past spring. My first time out I had to go home after 10 minutes. My feet were so swollen I literally had to cut my shoes off. The shoes were pretty old so I blamed them. I got new shoes. Just as bad. However, having just spend over $100 on new shoes I wasn't cutting them off. I put them in a large bowl of ice until the swelling went down.

Finally, I went to the doctor about the pain. She diagnosed me with plantar fasciitis. I've been doing the stretches, I got the shoes, I do the bottle of ice...It is better, but I still can't run without my feet swelling beyond belief. Plus the pain is so intense.

Does anyone have any suggestions or should I give up?

I don't think you should give up, but don't hurt yourself.

I read this article recently: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-286--6710-0,00.html

and it has tons of great tips on stretches and such.  One of the suggestions is to see a sports podiatrist as they are specialists in determining what kind of stretches, preventatives (like taping), and therapies may work best for your individual problem.

Yikes.  I have PF and my foot has never swelled.  My podiatrist also told me there wasn't a reason to stop running and it's never bothered me while running. Personally, I'd get another opinion.

My first question is did you get x-rays along with that diagnosis???? I had a doctor tell me that diagnosis once... 2 weeks later an xray showed i had actually had a stress fracture in the foot.  Especially if the running is new for you, if there were no xrays involved you may want to look into that...

I would get a second opinion and maybe a set of xrays. I also have PF and haven't had swelling. After the second opinion, it might be time for some custom fit shoes from a running store if taping etc does not work.
