Any brides using Tplex? Vent/Question

Hey all,

Warning: Partial Vent/Question.

So I am having great amount of difficultly nailing down a venue for the ceremony and reception. I have two dresses and my photographer already, and I am sitting at 368 days until W DAY. I NEED TO FIND A VENUE! Ugh. SO many to chooosefrom, but I am being picky. Until I found the Tplex... and I fell IN LOVE with it.

Anyway... I called Tplex to inquire about open dates and prices. I WAS FLOORED at how much the cost to rent this "raw" space was! I cannot justify a $35 charge per person when there is no catering. Chair, Tables, Elevator, Proector and sound system. Has anyone else gotten a quote from them? Is there a minimum charge and that is why it is so much per person? Or am I just being unreasonable becuase this is a "haute" place to get married?

  • There are several brides on here using the TPlex. In fact, if you search TPlex at the bottom of the page, you should come up with several posts.

Unfortunately, I'm not one of them so I can't help you out with your specific question. But, I would encourage you to take a deep breath. You have about a year to get everything nailed down and that's plenty of time.

</div><div>I'm one of the brides getting married at the T-Plex. It sounds like the rental price has gone up substantially from the 2012 rental rates and that they've changed the pricing structure. We were not given a per person price, but rather a flat rental price per number of people that went up by a couple hundred dollars for every additional 40-50 people (example, $XX amount for 100-150 people). There was no minimum charge.</div><div>
</div><div>If you want to know more, I can PM you. Let me know.</div><div>
</div><div>What are some of the other venues you've looked at/considered?</div>
  • I am likewise one of the T-Plex brides and am not being charged per person for my Sept. 1st, 2012 wedding.

Like PP mentioned, I'm being charged for total number of guests. The rates I'm being charged are overly reasonable - so I'm guessing they've upped their prices due to cost changes (they're buliding a kitchen and upgrading a lot of the amenities at the venue to accomodate weddings and events). It is a historic building and that costs money to upkeep. I know for a minute they were considering not allowing weddings there anymore because of the wear and tear on the facility and the potential for damage.

From what you said that is a really drastic price increase though...might be worth seeing if they'll negotiate? Pat is super hard to get ahold of but she's not unreasonable...

  • Thanks ladies :) I know that she is very hard to get ahold of as all of my e-mails have gone unreturned, but she did seem reasonable. I am going to see what I can do. Thanks for the advice!

</div><div>HOLY COW. Who was the person who gave you that quote??? I seriously don't think that prices would jump THAT MUCH. I'm getting married there in October, and for 180-220 people we are only paying $2400. That's like $12 a person. I would double check on the prices you got. I'd really be surprised if they tripled the cost.

  • Not sure how "wedded" (no pun intended) to the t-plex, but I have to believe if they won't negotiate you can find places for much less for the rental. I know t-plex has a lot of fans, because it's so different. If I ever won the lottery I'd buy a building in Downtown Detroit that was bare bones and rent it for weddings, LOL.

If you are having less than 100 people, our venue, Greenmead Village in Livonia was reasonable. Link inside my bio below, click on Vendors once you get to the main page.

Also, do a search below on "Venues". There was a post in the past few months regarding a blog kept by a woman in the Detroit area that did a ton of research before her wedding on Detroit proper venues.

I am in the same boat! I just stumbled across Tplex this week and fell in love! I called Pat on Monday and got the same quote - $35/pp. I am so bummed....I definitely cannot justify spending that much just to rent the space. If you come across anything else, let me know! :)
  • Wow...that is ridiculous. I just got married there and it was much, much less than that. It was a very good deal for what we paid but $35 a person for what they offer is crazy. Ditto what PP said that they may be trying to get out of the wedding scene. I will be posting my reviews shortly but just an FYI for anyone who may be considering the T Plex- be prepared to have a very hard time with Pat, as mentioned above by others and in previous posts. In the last few days before my wedding, I had a very difficult time with her and I am NOT a high maintenance bride/person at all. I barely asked for anything and still got SO much attitude. I asked for a broom to sweep up a broken bulb from our light strands and she rolled her eyes at me. Keep in mind no one else was there and she was not terribly busy. Details to follow, but wanted to give all a heads up.

  • Well, this is a bummer! $35/person*my 200 guests=$7,000! That's just insane. Do they provide tables and chairs at least? Good gracious. That's the same price the freaking DIA charges!

  • I haven't tried to negotiate the price down seeing as how I was not the only one to get the same price information. Ditto two the both of you, I wonder if they are trying to get out of the wedding scene.

I wonder if we can get a few wanting brides together and collectively talk to Pat about inching down the price?

And I agree, $7000 for 200 people is COMPLETELY unreasonable. I believe that is quite a bit higher that the DIA, ZOO and the Roostertail and doesn't include FOOD. @ Ophelia0326, yes, that does include chairs and tables. I am, however, not certain if the kitchen renovation is complete.

I also looked into the Casino @ Belle Isle. I have a feeling it won't be available for my date because of The Grand Prix and also I bet it will be very hot in the building. I am now inquiring about the DHM, The Old Streets of Detroit

    Le Sigh.

<div>I tried searching for this post, I thought someone had hotlinked it, but I couldn't find it. Maybe if I, or someone else, finds it, we should re-post it. Might be worth it if the information is helpful!</div>

  • Le Sigh indeed! Why is this part so hard?!? I'm probably going to call Pat anyway and see what she has to say...and probably give her a piece of my mind, even though I know it's not her fault.  I really want to like Belle Isle, but I just keep hearing about problems people are having with the staff and the facilities...no air conditioning at the Casino or DYC? No bathrooms at the conservatory? Please.

  • Hi all. My fiance and I are also considering the Tplex for next fall. In addition to the $35 per person fee, Pat said that they're limiting the number of people to 160 . Did she tell anyone else that? I've asked for all of these changes in writing several times but haven't received anything. That makes me wonder if any of this is final...?

I'd be down for getting a few brides together to collectively talk to Pat but ultimately, I'm pretty sure she doesn't make the final decisions. Maybe a meeting with the board would be more effective? Let me know what you girls think!

  • I was also considering the Tplex back in February when the old pricing was still in place.  I made the final decision earlier this month and was quite disappointed to hear of the new pricing structure.  Pat also told me about the new max capacity of 160.  The capacity is what actually killed it for me.  Very disappointing.  I doubt you will be able to change the board's mind.  If a group of brides could get a price lowered, weddings wouldn't be so expensive in the first place!

After deciding against the African American museum due to lack of space for a ceremony, I discovered the Tplex before reading this thread and decided to visit yesterday 8/4/12 with my fianc. We both fell in LOVE as well. That was until Pat who hadnt responded to my email either informed us of the 5600 for 160 people without food or anything else being included. My heart hit the floor along with my jaw. That's outrageous especially with nothin being included. Our wedding is a year away and my heart is broken. I have no idea what I'll do.
  • Just found out I lost my second favorite venue choice, The structure at Metrobeach (Lake St. Clair metro Park). Its completely booked for Summer of 2013 already! More work to do i suppose!
