Cake Pulls

I've read about cake pulls and it sounds like fun.  I kinda know what they are but since I've never seen it done, I'm not clear exactly how it works or when it's done
Thanks

It's fun!  And definitely a new orleans tradition.  it's done at the same time as the cake cutting.  It's usually only for the bride's closest single gals.  There is usually a ring for the "next to be married" and usually a button or something for "old maid", then a whole bunch of other charms depending on how many girls you have.  The dj or band leader should be given a list of girls ahead of time so that they can make the announcement when it's time.

There are also new orleansy cake pulls. Like a street car, king cake, crawfish, etc. Haydels sells them. They are too cute.

Thanks.  I know I'm obsessing but does everyone pull at once or one at a time?

ALL AT ONCE IS MORE FUN TO ME, BUT YOU COULD DO IT EITHER WAY.

The Bead Shop on Magazine has loads of inexpensive ones.....we used diferent colored ribbons for the pulls.....since some charms were seem to be for married BMs....like baby carriage....blue for single, white for married

I am doing the cake pulls and got them from the jewelry show and got ribbon from michaels.  I would make a suggestion to not do the old maid cake pulls because it does hurt the girl who gets that one's feelings.  It is just what I have experienced.

I've always seen it done all together.  I got mine from the Bead Shop on magazine because they were inexpensive (I spent about $17 total with ribbon).  Gem Printing in Metairie also has them cheap.  If you want higher end- Mignon Faget jewlers has some fabulous sterling silver ones that can be put on a necklace after, but I think they are $350 for a set of 8 or 10.

I have gotten the old maid one TWICE, and though I mean it doesn't hurt my feelings *per se*, I'm just like, well that sucked!!  I would agree, skip that particular charm, or get more FUN ones, like the New Orleans-y ones sound cute. :-)

Even now I'm like "yeah I got the old maid cake pull at my friend M's wedding when I was a bridesmaid,"  and that was 10 years ago, HA.  It's not really fun if you have a "loser" pull in the group, u know.

Anyway, rant over, ha :) .

Oh, we would never put in an old maid's charm.  It's supposed to be fun after all.  I like the idea of New Orleansy charms, too.  I'm also intrigued by the idea of something the bridesmaids could keep as part of the "thank you" gift but don't know what my daughter has in mind for that.   She's finishing up med school and has very little time to plan or do research.  This board has been so great.  I have been able to pass on so much info to her.   Thanks again to everyone!

I'm including an Old Maid pull, but I also intend to have a nice gift for the girl who pulls it. I had originally intended on getting the Mignon Faget pulls so that my friends could wear them afterwards, but that is an awful lot of money to spend when someone might not like the design of their pull.

Most bakery shops down here iether have cake pulls or can recommend places to you.

Is this just a New Orleans thing? My FI is from NOLA but we are getting married on the North Shore. He didn't know what it was.

  • The custom dates back a long ago from the aristocratic Creoles who fiirst settled in New Oleans. I am sure it branched out to other regions in the South but dont think it caught on quite as well in other places. I went to four New Orleans weddings last year and they all had them. It is as standard as a garter toss. My Fiance is from an area just outside of Nola and he never heard of it either. But I think that is just because he is a man and doesnt notice such things. He usually sits outside smokes a cigar during the cake cutting.
