large wedding in Key West

From what I've researched so far, a lot of wedding planners and venues in Key West seem to tend more to small destination weddings, has anyone had a large wedding (100+) down in the keys?
I'd love to trim the guest list but my folks are paying so they get the say in the WHOLE family being invited. I'm just concerned that this crowd will be too large for a beach wedding since the beaches are fairly small in KW.

Would love any advice from all you KW brides!!

Re: large wedding in Key West

  • My cousin is getting married the day before me at the Hemingway House, I know that could be a possible venue for a larger affair. Quick google search brought up this wedding planner http://asuwishweddings.com/index.php/packages, Also you can look at Casa Marina or Ocean Key http://www.oceankey.com/florida-wedding-venues.aspx. • You may want to post this on the Destination Weddings board as well!

  • I've done a wedding before at the Hemingway House (I'm also a certified wedding planner) ... While it is a nice and unique venue, I don't necessarily think that it would accommodate 100 people for a ceremony AND reception. You do not have access to the house, just the grounds. Last time I was there, the bathrooms (which are in the back of the facility near the pool), they were disgusting (i get that's the way Hemingway had it, but it's not attractive to guests) ... and the cats have free roam of the venue. I would say to have a successful wedding at Hemingway House, you would want to keep the guest list at around 50.

That being said, I looked into a bunch of venues in the Keys (not just Key West) when I was looking for venues. We want a beach wedding, and the Keys had appeal. While I am not sure of your budget and what you would like to spend per person, I might be able to help venue-wise.

Here are some venues I looked into:
Crowne Plaza Key West - La Concha
The Westin - Key West - Resort & Marina
Cheeca Lodge & Spa - Islamorada
Hawks Cay Resort & Marina - Duck Key
Hilton Key Largo Grande Resort & Beach Club

I remember looking at other websites (Sheraton, etc.) and also looked at the hotel next to the Southern Most Point (don't remember the name of it off the top of my head) ... but those are just a few suggestions and my "recommendation" regarding Hemingway House.

HTH and if you need help, please let me know! :) (my company is called Serenity Events)
