Probably dumb but...

...who else, if anyone, has to sign the marriage licence? I remember reading somewhere that the MOH or best man often do it. I looked up license laws in Pennsylvania and couldn't find anything about witnesses, etc. My local board is dead so I figured I'd ask here. Any suggestions appreciated, and again... sorry if this is a dumb question!

I think it depends on the state. I know that's not super helpful! We did not personally have to sign our own license here in IL but our pastor did and then I think one witness (an honor attendant). I know it sounds bad that I don't know but we gave it to our pastor on the wedding day and he said he knew exactly what needed to be done (has done many weddings) and would take care of it.

  • lol this isn't a dumb question. I can't find the answer online, either, but there are numbers you can call..

In general, usually it just has to be two witnesses that are 18 and over. Usually. I would definitely call if no one can find the answer online. Actually, I would call, just to double check.

  • It depends on the state.  Indiana didn't require one.  I'm certain your officiant will know the answer though.

  • Yeah, it really depends. Some states require 2 witnesses, some require only the officiant. Some require the B&G to sign, others (like NJ) don't. We just stood there & watched the others sign. We needed 2 witnesses 18+ so we just did MOH and BM. But you can do anyone, really.
  • ditto PP.  In Indiana we signed the marriage license when we applied for it and our officiant signed it after the wedding.  Our MOH and BM signed a commemorative certificate that the state gave us.

I'm sure your officiant will know.

In Pennsylvania, witnesses do not sign.  The only time you and your FI will sign is when you get the license from the clerk.  The officiant will sign the license and file it after the wedding.

  • Once you get the license, it should be pretty clear what signatures you need.  In Nevada, we needed the officiant and one witness, but not our own signatures (since they got that on the application).  You can also ask your officiant or call the county office where the wedding will be held, since this sometimes varies by county rather than by state.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
