I'm doing a June Vow Renewal

Hello, all. My name is Julie and my husband and I are doing a vow renewal for our 15th wedding anniversary. I realize vow renewals are a bit controversial, but I'd love to hang out here and enjoy ceremony planning and party planning with you all, if you don't mind.

Re: I'm doing a June Vow Renewal

  • How fun!  SOOooo to be completely nosey (because honestly Im not in on what's hip or cool or anything) do couples usually do vowel renewals because their original wedding was not quite what one would have hoped?  Again, I apologize for my ignorance!

OR is it just because after 15 years, you're still in love and it's wonderful and you simply just want to celebrate and share it with everyone? :-)

I have never attended a vowel renewal, so other than you already being married, Im not really sure of the differences
Of course you can join us! I personally think vow renewals are very romantic. Big weddings are fun the first time around, but I envision having a small, private vow rernewal someday. I just really like the idea of them. Tell us more about yourself and your H!
    Posted by cnf2013
Thanks, cnf! I think vow renewals are incredibly romantic, too. :) Due to way too much family interference, we eloped. We wanted a big wedding, but when my future mother-in-law went to planning, she completely took over. She told us this was HER wedding and she'd been planning it since my husband was a baby. We tried to let things slide until she let me know she'd picked out my dress and who I needed to get in touch with to get it altered. I never did make that call and didn't see the dress until years later. We called off the wedding that day. It was about a month later that we were headed to church and decided we looked good enough to get married! LOL We were literally on our way to the church when we decided to elope. My best friend's husband was a preacher and he did it for us. We don't regret eloping, but it wasn't at all what we dreamed of. We resented feeling like we had to call of the wedding we wanted, although it was our decision to do so, not anybody else's.In the end, we were just as married and it'll be fun to celebrate 15 years together next year.

I'm a 42 yo, stay-at-home mom to four kids, ages 8-18. I homeschool my 8 yo son, 11 yo daughter, and homeschooled my 18 yo, too, but he graduated and is doing the whole college thing in a few weeks. I also have a 13 yo, but she prefers public school. We live in a fantastic school district, so I'm perfectly fine with her public school choice. My husband is a 41 yo long-haul truck driver for a company that works big name concerts. He's only home 1 to 2.5 months in the winter, but the company is letting him take a couple of weeks off in June to celebrate our anniversary.

I look forward to getting to know people here!

  • Ash, it's vow, not vowel!  A vowel is like A, E, I, O or U.

I don't really know why most people do them. I think the reasons vary a lot. In our case, the first 2/3 of our marriage came with a lot of drama and illness, not to mention 3 more kids on top of the one I brought to the marriage! It was tough, but we made it through. Now we want to celebrate the life we've built together despite some serious hurdles many couples wouldn't have made it through (although never infidelity, thank goodness!). And what better way to celebrate than to treat our family and friends who have been with us through thick and thin with a wonderful meal?

That explains the anniversary party, but the vow renewal has a whole different meaning for us. You all may not go through this, but we weren't prepared for the problems we had no idea were coming. We failed to be what the other needed in a spouse quite often. It's amazing we stayed together. We can't go back and do better, especially now that we are in a different part of our lives. We are no longer establishing careers, adding to our family, raising demanding babies, or figuring out where we stand as a couple. Now we want to promise each other forgiveness for the past and make vows that are relevant to the people we are now and our future together. A vow to do our best to be the spouse the other needs. I'm sure we still won't be perfect, but after being together this long, we have a much better grasp on who the other person is and how that person needs us. Funny, but we are more serious about the vow renewal than we were the wedding! Maybe it's because we now realize we THOUGHT we knew what we were getting ourselves into then, and now we KNOW.

Sorry if I over-explained that. I tend to ramble. LOL

I wish we had our own Vow Renewal board in the TK community so I could meet others who are doing this. There are a lot of us here on TK, but there's no specific place we can talk and exchange ideas. You guys might also be surprised (or not!) to find out there are people here planning renewals but are afraid to say so because of how mean some people can be about their choice to do that. I get PMs from ladies who'd like to share what they are doing and get ideas, but don't want to do it openly.

Thanks again, everybody! I love reading about what you all are doing and will jump in with suggestions and ideas where I can! :)

I have actually done that, cnf! I've sent emails to a few people on TK and the moderator for the March 2013 board (which I came from after we had to change our renewal date) has brought it up on the moderators' forum. I've also tried to encourage others doing renewals to send emails. It would be so wonderful if some of this went somewhere.
