Bug off!

I was just outside and got eaten by mosquitos. I put some aloe and benadryl cream on the bites to help soothe them. It worked for most of them, but there's one on my ankle that is still really itchy!

So I'm curious. What home remedy do you use for mosquito bites? And why?

Re: Bug off!

  • Make a paste with meat tenderizer and water, and put it on the bites.  Let it dry and hang out (I put a bandaid on it overnight) and wash it off later.

The tenderizer tederizes meat by breaking down the proteins, and it does the same to the mosquito "venom" that makes you itchy.

  • A friend of mine swears by making a paste of dry mustard, flour, and water and dabbing it on bug bites. She says it stops the itching and swelling, but if it's left on too long it can burn and scab. I was always afraid of trying it for that reason, but apparently it works. I have no idea the science behind it, so it could very well be an old wives tale kind of thing.
  • I put Scotch tape over itchy bites. The adhesive helps suck out the itchy venom, and keeping air sealed out of it makes it itch less as well.

  • I got nothing.  I've heard my mother say that vinegar helps.  I get a terrible reaction to bug bites so I just go straight for the Benadryl.
  • Soak in a warm tub, dry off and try the "Fast Acting Benedryl Spray". It really helps me.

  • I second the After Bite recommendation.

The meat tenderizer thing works, too. But, for me, it's just easier to grab the After Bite.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar. it smells so bad but it really works.
  • Before you go anywhere, take a B complex vitamin about a half hour before you leave the house. I live in Fl, and mosquitoes LOVE me, to the point where people juoke I'm their insect repellent.

There is something in the B complex which makes us unappealing to skitters.

Meat tenderizer also works (and so does MSG, but be careful if you have MSG sensitivity)

    Good luck
  • I used prescription strength hydrocortisone. When I get bit, they swell really bad, but this helps.
