April 2013 Weddings

Honest opinions please

I realize everyone has their own style, however, I am looking at bridesmaids dresses and just not finding much I like.  I really hoped to stay away from the "typical" bridesmaids dress and just buy something from JC Penny's or something but finding out that's not quite as easy as I'd hoped.  I found these dresses which I LOVE but not sure they're appropriate.  Most weddings have bridesmaids dresses that are one color but the one I like is multi.  Will this take away from me inthe pic or be too busy?  My bridesmaids are my 19 year old niece, 19 year old soon to be step daughter and my 40 year old best friend for my MOH.  My color is turquoise.  My dress is chiffon and the venue is a tropical/lodgy type place.  Our theme is tropical/beachy, but very subtIe.  I attached a link.  I would love to hear opinions.  I know this dress is not most people's style but I'd love some honest input.  Thank you!!!

  • I like that it's a print and love that it's not your "typical" bridesmaid dress.  It looks a little young though, does the 40 year old like it too?  If they all like it, I think it would be fine for the bridesmaid dress.  I have a variety in my bridal party (ages 16-30, sizes 0-26w), and I am going to make my girls infinity dresses.  Have you ever seen/considered them? http://sewlikemymom.com/little-red-infinity-dress-tutorial/

  • I think they are pretty and perfect for a beach wedding.  I've seen pictures in a couple of wedding blogs with bridesmaids in patterned dresses and it didn't distract from the bride at all. I'd also agree with PP about the dress looking a little young, but if everyone likes it - go for it. :)

I decided I didn't really want to do the typical bridesmaid dresses as well, mainly because I have bridesmaids located in 5 different states, so for logistical reasons, to have everyone order at the same time to get the same dye lot did not seem practical at all. So i decided to let each girl pick a short chiffon alfred angelo dress in one of three colors.  They don't have dye lots, but because everyone will have a different dress, even if it is slightly off it won't be a huge deal. This also works because my bridal party also ranges from size 2-20, so everyone picks a dress that is flattering to them.

Honestly, I think that dress is gorgeous and think it is perfectly fine for your ladies to wear. My only issue is would THEY want to wear it? For me personally, I couldn't pull that dress off and would feel uncomfortable wearing it. I would ask what they think, have them try it on and go from there. If they all like it I would totally do it! Let us know what happens!

I like them if it suits you and your girls. BC they are so not 'typical' i would make sure the girls feel comfortable and look good in them. Does that dress style also fit your venue type? I think for tropical beachy its great.
I also like the dress suggestion about the convertible dress. I just went to a wedding and the girls had them and they looked really nice.

  • Thank you very much for your input!  The two 19 year olds love the dresses and my MOH hasn't seen it yet, but I think she will like it too.  I've attached a picture of my dress, it's chiffon and the place we are getting married is in an atrium with a waterfall and lots of greenery.  The reception hall is rustic/lodgy and doing some beachy touches.  One small problem, I had copied and pasted the picture of the dresses from the email I sent to my niece and now when I look on David's Bridal I don't find them.  I was just there a few weeks ago and they had them, but since they're special occasion maybe they're gone now.  Looks like that's where I'll be going on my lunch today.  Also, the price was crazy at 84.00 so I wonder if it was a clearance to get rid of them.  I guess we'll see.  Thanks again!!

When I click on your link I can still see the dress and add it to my shopping bag, so I hope it is still there!

I called David's and they only have 3 left in this store and they are not orderable.  2 of the sizes would possibly work, but not the size 1!  The girls won't be in town til next week from college so I just figure when they're back we'll go try them on and then see if any other stores have their size.  For now, I'll keep on looking!

Could they go to a store in their own town, and figure out which size they would need and then just order them online?

  • I love the dress and the colors, but I don't think it "goes" with your dress.  Your dress is GORGEOUS, and I've told you that before, but it's a typical wedding dress and the bridesmaids dress you picked couldn't be further from typical.  I can't imagine them looking good in photos.  Sorry.  Can you give the WP some "homework" and tell them to look for something in your colors that's not so typical?  My bff had a tough time picking our dresses when she got married and it was one of the other BM's who ended up finding the dresses we eventually wore.

If you don't mind sharing, what venue are you using?  I don't know of anything like you described and I have a cousin who wants to do a tropical wedding but isn't keen on a destination wedding to do it.

  • I think we're gonna end up going with something else because the girls are in the middle of finals and getting ready to come back from collegel so the last thing they need to do is to be running around to a dress shop.  We have time and I'm sure I'll find something.

We're having it at Indian Lakes in Bloomingdale.  The atrium is very pretty with greenery and a waterfall.  The reception area is more rustic/lodgy than tropical, but we are just doing little tropical touches with the centerpieces, placecards and a couple of other things.  It's not your typical fancy banquet hall, but it suits us perfectly which is the most important part.  I've attached a link, your cousin should take a look.
