How to plan around a deployment??

Has anyone ever tried to plan a wedding without knowing what day the wedding will be? My fiance is currently stationed out in California and will be getting deployed, and I'm not sure how far in advance I'll be able to plan certain things. Has anyone been in this situation before, or have any tips on how to plan things without an exact time frame?

Our best man was about to be deployed, so we waited until he got his window of assignment before we booked anything that couldn't be changed, like venues. When we were planning, he had a May 1st date, so the window was 2 weeks on either side of that, so we went with April 9th to be safe. It ended up getting pushed back to May 19th, so we could have gone later, but we wanted to be on the safe side (and we really lucked out with the weather - easily the nicest weekend of the month). He's in training in MS now and will be going to Kuwait/Iraq again in early July for his second tour there.
