Treadmill question

I would like to purchase a treadmill. I use it all the time when I work out at the hotel, and I would use it more if it were at my house. I can't decide which route I should go? Help ladies! :P

1) Chad's aunt has a 12 year old treadmill, barely used, very high end. I could get it for $50-S100. The downside is it doesn't fold up and it is bigger than I would like. (It is going in our spare room and there isn't much space in there, and I would like it to fold up so it doesn't look cluttered.)

2) Buy a basic new one for $300-$400 that is a little smaller and folds up. The downside is I can get one for much cheaper. Is the extra money worth more space?

I have the money for the new one but I have no problem saving it. :)

Re: Treadmill question

  • If it can fit, I'd go with #1.  I'm cheap like that, hahaha.  But especially if it's essentially a better/higher quality treadmill than a new, smaller one.

  • I had bad luck with a cheap fold up one.. I would go with the bigger one bc it will probably last longer if its barely been used. I felt like the fold up one also squeaked a lot and seemed louder when I ran.

  • I voted 1.  It seems like the smaller the treadmills are, the less sturdy they are.  From the experiences I have had, the smaller ones are harder on my knees.
  • I wouldn't trust a treadmill that old even if it's barely used.  If it were free I'd say yes but idk they can be temperamental and treadmills are getting better and better right now.
  • I agree with PP. 300 dollar treadmills brand new are not always the best quality. I am cheap but when it comes to treadmills I'd spend the money for quality. I voted for the first option. It's older but you might regret getting the newer one for more money. Start out with the used. If it doesn't workout you didn't spend much and perhaps you can find something else.

I don't think age is the issue, it's usage.  There is no such thing as a ten year old treadmill at the gym because they get used all day, every day and wear out.  A ten year old treadmill that hasn't been used very often probably still has life in it.

I would get the inexpensive, older one to see if you are going to stick with using it.  After a year, upgrade to a new, good quality one.

My mother's PreCor treadmill (probably about $2,500 when she bought it) is at least 12 years old and it's still going.  She uses it 4-5 nights per week.
  • I agree with Jeannine, while it might be older if she's hardly used it then it might still be in good working condition.  I'm also cheap when it comes to things like that and unless I was completley sure I'd use it often enough to make spending more money worth it I would try the cheaper one.
  • I was also wondering about fold-up vs. non fold-up treadmills...

    Agreed.

  • My parents have a fold up treadmill and it's a pain to fold and unfold. Once you fold it up you aren't going to want to touch it for at least a month. I would go with the older one.

  • Thanks ladies! I think I will be going with his aunt's. We still have to check it out and decide on a price.

  • I'd go with the aunt's and see how much you actually do use it home. If it is a model that has never been used it essentially a new treadmill. Like you get a pair a shoes, wear them once and then don't wear them again for 2 years, they still are basically new shoes.

  • I say go with the new one that folds. I may be bias though because i live in a small apartment and couldn't imagine having something that takes up so much space! If i had the extra money, I'd be buying new workout stuff!
