Bad Vendor: ADS Lighting

Throughout my planning process I saw many posts regarding worries about ADS lighting and had my own concerns. Andy is very difficult to get a hold of, doesnt do contracts or deposits, and doesn't really want to deal with you until a few weeks before the wedding. Despite all of these negatives, my wedding venue coordinator continued to praise his work and tell me he was trustworthy.

Well, I got married last weekend (yay!) and I should've trusted my instincts. Andy was supposed to place 8 uplights onto the ceiling and 8 uplights around the walls so the entire room was lit in an amber glow. He was supposed to arrive at 11AM. At 1PM he wasn't there yet, so my wedding planner called him and he said he was just a few blocks away. 1:30, 2:00, 3:00-- no lights (must've been some long blocks). Finally at 4:30 (5.5 hrs late!!!) he showed up. Fortunately, my wedding planner took care of everything and didn't tell me about his tardiness until I had already walked down the aisle and everything was in place. I truly believe that if my wedding planner hadn't been calling him every half-hour he never would've shown up. Then to top it off, when I walked into the reception, there were no uplights on the walls. Just on the ceiling. (He probably didn't have time to finish). No one noticed except me, and we even got compliments on the lighting, but I knew it could've and should've been even better.
I want you to know that I'm not a complainer and every single other vendor we used went above and beyond my expectations and the day was absolutely amazing. I just don't want any other brides to have to deal with this crap and be stressed or disappointed at all on their wedding day.

I would maybe page GMC and see if she can add this to the vendor beware list. I'm sorry that you had problems with them-- I definitely recognize the name. Otherwise, I'm glad everything went well! You should post pictures :o)

    Congrats on the wedding!

I'm sorry ADS didnt pull through for you - this is a very common thing we've heard from a lot of brides. I'd definitely start a new post paging GMC (or PM-ing her) so that she sees this and adds it to the vendor beware list.

I can't imagine how frustrated you must be. I'm glad everything else worked out though :-)

Yes, GMC should be made aware to add them to the 'bad vendor list'. And I know that she is actually planning on using ADS as that is the only company that Carnegie Music Hall (her vendor) will allow her to use. I think there is someone else at ADS that Carnegie works with though (not Andy). I hope this is the case, as I also am having my reception at Carnegie and I wanted pin spot lighting on my tables. Maybe Carnegie just stays on ADS's case so to speak so they haven't had any issues with them?

OP, can you please e-mail pghknotties@gmail.com? Just include what you posted on here and then please delete your post. There are many vendors who lurk on these boards.

Carnegie had been working with BSP, not ADS. BSP has done several events for me and they are fantastic!
Hopefully they didn't switch to ADS.

Yes!! I just had my meeting with the coordinator a few months ago and they DO NOT use Andy any more because of this reason. They now exclusively use Flip from Benack Sound Productions, Inc. Just got a quote from him! :)

OP - Sorry you had a terrible experience with Andy. I too was going to have him but am so thankful the Carnegie will no longer use him! PantherRN is now in charge of maintaining the vendor beware list - I'm sure she will get this squared away for you!

GMC-- Flip (BSP) is great! And his staff is fantastic! They've done major lighting and AV things for us and have been spectacular to work with.

I also used ADS lighting for my wedding and had a HORRIBLE experience!!! He showed up over 3 hours LATE on the day of my rehearsal, to do some "preliminary setup" making us extremely late for our rehearsal dinner and brought the wrong colored gels even after he was late!! Mind you, this was the appointment time HE set. When my MOH kindly asked him if he was going to return with the correct color, he flipped out and made a scene in front of all of my friends and family!!! The only way he would get us the correct colored gels is if a family member of mine drove from Uniontown to Pittsburgh to pick them up from his house! He didn't even show up on the day of my wedding to operate the lighting! My cousin, the DJ, ended up plugging in all of the lights all over the room as people were coming in to my reception when we then realized he never came!! My DJ has NOTHING to do with the uplighting and I paid this ADS lighting over $500 for his services which he barely rendered!!! I wouldn't trust this man to light a match! UNPROFESSIONAL, UNRELIABLE, EXTREMELY RUDE!!!! RUN! RUN! RUN!!!
