PSA: Costa Rica

Just saw this come through my email - it's a really great deal for a fabulous luxury hotel in a great area of Costa Rica, if anyone's interested!  I know a few of you have mentioned it before, and we were talking about it the other day.  This hotel is actually one where FI and I had discussed maybe getting married, when we were trying to do a destination wedding to CR (before my family totally nixed the idea).

If the link doesn't work for any reason, feel free to PM me and I'll email it to you.

Hey Cal, I know you're leaving from FL, so it'd be different than up here, but are flights to CR generally expensive? I'm sort of keeping my eye out for HM deals for my BIL and FSIL for this summer. They are on a pretty major budget, so I'm thinking a Livingsocial/Groupon deal is the way to go, but then adding airfare can kill it.

Irish, I flew from DC (I think it was Reagan) the first time I went, and it cost about $250 roundtrip.  When I booked flights for my family for this October trip, the flights from Boston were pricey - around $400 roundtrip, and the flights from Boulder were around $350 roundtrip.

American Airlines is typically the cheapest way to do it, and definitely flying into San Jose (don't fly into Liberia - crap airport, super expensive).

I might have to PM you. I'm searching through LS Escapes like mad right now. She has never been out of the country, and thinks it's too far of a flight. I truly have no idea how far it is--geography fail on my part. But I'm trying to think of what would be closer. Off to look at a map.

It's about 2.5 hours from Miami, and most flights from anywhere in the US will stop in Miami.  I'm a big fan of leaving the country for vacation - I feel like you get such great experiences by stepping out of your comfort zone and seeing what else is out there!  I've got serious wanderlust.

Kayak.com is my go-to for finding flights.  You can use Bing Travel to see if prices are likely to go up, down, or stay the same (it's pretty reliable, though they don't always have international flights on there, but you could try flights to Miami to give an idea about whether flights in that general direction are going up or down).

Ok good to know its not that far from Miami. I reread my post and was totally unclear. Haha so she's never been out of the country, which is why it's basically mandatory for their HM....but I feel like because she has not experience with it (flown twice ever I think) she's really freaked out by a long flight, which I can understand. Hell, personally I'm leaning towards Costa Rica next time H and I can afford a vaca. And these escapes are killing me. Hotels in wine country, vail, vegas for cheap. Sigh.

Ooooh yeah, I hear you!  I know I'm way too broke for a real vacation and don't have the vacation time right now anyway, but I keep getting emails for last minute cruise deals.  And they're like $120-140 per person for a 3-4 day weekend cruise out of Miami.  Sooooo tempting but I can't afford it!  Boo!
