40 minute ceremony - Can we sit down?

I'm having a Methodist ceremony that will run about 40 minutes. It seems like a long time to stand in my dress and heels. I'm considering having chairs for me and my FI to sit in during portions of the ceremony that don't directly involve us (reading, solo, congregational prayer, etc.)

Any thoughts on this idea?

Re: 40 minute ceremony - Can we sit down?

  • We sat during our Catholic ceremony. We sat in the front pew, but I have been at other weddings where the bride and groom have sat in chairs. 40 minutes is a long time to stand still with all those eyes on you in a big wedding dress during a very exciting moment in your life.

  • We had a 45 minute ceremony.  We sat in the first pew during the readings and the sermon.
  • Our ceremony was 40 min. and we did stand for the whole thing. However, I've attended weddings (especially Catholic weddings) where the B&G had a chair up on the altar and sat during readings, etc. and just stood for the vows.

[QUOTE]I'm pretty sure it being a "Methodist" ceremony has nothing to do with it being 40 minutes long, but yes, you can have chairs up there.  However, if you have a WP standing with you, make sure you have plans for them to sit too.

It has to do with the fact that we are following the Order of Service for Christian Marriage for the United Methodist Church. It is longer than most ceremonies.

I would definitely have time for you and the wedding party to sit.  How many videos have we seen where someone doesn't make it through the whole ceremony?  40 minutes can be a long time.

Its a valid question.  Each religion and sect is different.  Even every minister.  Some believe that B&Gs should stand the whole time or kneel.

I would speak to your minister and see if he has an issue with it.  I doubt he will so sit. Plus it can get really HOT standing for 40 minutes in gowns and tuxes!  Sit, its not disrespectful to your guests and as long as your minister is fine with it its not disrespectful to the church either.  Just make sure to practice it at your rehearsal and expect to rework your train after getting back up (MOH helps with this).
