Music at the ceremony

Are you paying for a soloist? I only need two songs to be sung. (its a catholic wedding) and the one the church suggest is $75. THe ceremony is only 45mins, (no mass groom isnt catholic) For 2 songs I think its pricey. Am I wrong? Ive never paid for a soloist. And there's separate charge for the music. We picked the Harp I dont mind paying the Harpist's price its for the whole 45mins.

My church wanted $250 for the soloist and $300 for the pianiast !!!!!!!! We are opting for regular music played via cd.

The soloist may only sing 2 songs, but she still has to be there the entire ceremony. Do you have any family members or close friends you could ask to sing the songs for you?  If not, you may have to pay the soloist or use instrumental music.

My organist also sings well, so I'm just using her, and a violin.
  • Is there a college or highschool near you? Maybe you could find a student who would be willing to do it for cheaper?

  • I don't think it's all that outrageous, if they are a professional that has been doing this many years. If they are new to this, I would say it's too much. As a vocalist I can attest that they will have to put a fair amount of practice time into learning and perfecting these songs. So if you split that money over the time they will spend preparing and performing, it's not that bad.
  • I'm paying $515 for my string quartet plus about $150 for three pieces that I am dead set on and they have to learn.

I went to a pretty prestigious university for music in my area and was playing at a professional level at the time. $75 is completely reasonable.

  • I'm having a catholic ceremony with no communion. We're having prerecorded music (sssh don't tell the catholic board ladies). Taking out communion was the only way the priest allowed us to not have live music.

  • I would jump at $75 as pp said she may only sing 1 song bu she has to drive there stay an hour maybe more and then drive home.
  • Our soloist is a friend, so I'm not much help there.  Our pianist is $200 for the rehearsal and the ceremony.

This!  I contacted the local university but school is now out for summer.  I'm also going to contact the local HS in Sept to see.  FI wants a string quartet, but we aren't spending $800 for it!  If it doesn't work out our DJ already includes the ceremony set up.

  • As a former musician with a lot of musician friends, I agree that $75 is a steal!
  • My cousins are playing violin for me...they are also bridesmaids...so I'm not paying them.

But, we are paying their friend who is playing cello.  He's in high school and didn't say how much money he wanted.  I asked my DOC what a reasonable payment was and she said $100, so we're going with that.  Based on the comments here, it seems like the right amount.
