Last night was a FAIL

FI and I locked ourselves out of our house. Like, at midnight..without our cell phones. It was really idiotic how it happened, but THANKFULLY we had a spare car key to use. We went to a hotel and tried to use their phone and phonebook to call a 24-hour locksmith but none were available in our area for some reason. Then some guy tried to teach us how to break into our own house, kind of creepy, and we were unsuccessful. So finally we gave up and went to my parents' house to stay the night. I almost gave them a heart attack at 2am ringing their doorbell. We felt so terrible but they were completely understanding.

Then in the morning we came back to our condo complex (we live on the 3rd story of a 6 unit building) and FI tracked down the maintenance workers who climbed a 30 foot ladder to our balcony and let us in through our sliding glass door.

What a night! We realized how dumb we were for not having spare house keys with our neighbors or family. New keys are made.

Anyone have any comparable "we're idiot" stories?? Please make me feel better haha.

I locked myself out of my car while it was running once in high school. . . that was pretty dumb.

Glad your parents live close to let you stay with them :)

cschiano--I did that, too! But I'm 27 and this was recent...heh...

The story: when I bought my car (used), the door locks were kind of sticky. It was extra cold one morning and I was trying to warm up my car before leaving for work. I'd unlocked the door, but when I closed the door (car running), it latched enough that I couldn't open it again. I had to call a locksmith and was about an hour late to work. The locksmith guy gave me a funny look when he walked up to the car, too. Heh, awesome.

I also forgot my keys once when I was living in a duplex in Queens. Both my roommates were asleep and they were the type to get really pissed if I woke them up, so I climbed up to the window (had to perch on the railing to the stairs up to the side door), removed the window fan, and got inside, all without waking anyone up.

My BF and I locked ourselves out of our house not too long ago. Our deadbolt had been sticking and finally got completely stuck in the lock position so that we couldn't turn it at all.

We went downtown in one of our cars, but ended up taking a taxi home and forgot to grab the garage door opener. While he paid the cab driver, I went into the backyard to try our sliding glass door. Thankfully, one of us had forgotten to lock it, so we were in! Good thing too, since our two dogs were inside - I don't think I've ever been so happy to see them as that night!

Needless to say, we called to get the lock fixed the next day.

So don't feel bad - at least one other couple has been there!

We had that happen a few months ago too. It was 12:30 am and we had just picked my elderly grandparents up from the airport. Earlier that night I met BF at his work closer to the airport and only took one car. He left his keys in his desk and I forgot my keys inside the house that morning. We had to pop the screens off and climb through the front window which was not easy but we made it in! So no, you're not alone.

I walked out of the house one night, closed the door behind me, then realized I had locked my car keys AND my house keys inside. Stupid door handle lock. Luckily I had my phone in my hand, so I called a locksmith and he charged me a ridiculous amount for a 30 second job. But I learned my lesson.

BF and I locked ourselves out of the house one night (forgot to take the garage door opener when we left the car downtown after a night out). Luckily we have a dog door in the back, so I just crawled through it and let BF in the front :)

My old car had an "anti theft device" in it.  Basically, it was an extra key that you had to insert below the steering wheel in order to start the car.  Well, it's placement wasn't very good, because we kept knocking it out.  Before I could drive, my grandma and I took the car (it was a hand-me-down from Madre) and we managed to knock it out under the seat without realizing it.  We also didn't know it existed.  We were stuck in a parking lot for 4 hours because we couldn't figure out what was wrong and why the car wouldn't start.

More recently (freshman year of college), I had parked the car over the weekend in a teachers' lot.  Well, I got sick and managed to lose the anti-theft key.  My parents had to overnight one, after my car had been sitting there for days.  The fines were ridiculous.

So, no, you're not the only one.

Hahaha was the guy like, "Trust me. I know exactly how to break into your house...and I really like your towel set..."

But jeepers, if you think thats bad...
I've locked my keys in my house and in my car so many times it's very very embarassing. I have two extra car keys (one for my wallet and one for my purse), both of my parents have a spare to my car, BF has a spare to my car, and BFs parents have a spare to my car. I've broken into my own apartment atleast ten times. A couple of years ago I locked my keys in my car in the middle of a New England snow storm...while my car was running. Luckily I was at BFs parent's house and his father "the car guy" was able to get into my car after about twenty minutes of standing in the snow storm at midnight.
Most recently, I called work to ask if I could come in early. They said yes and I stopped at the Dunkin Donuts to get coffee. When I came back to my car, I saw my keys sitting on my seat in my locked car. When I called work the florist answered and instead of relaying the message to my boss, she annouced it over the radio system, so every employee and customer  knew that I was going to be late because I locked myself out of my car.

Phew long. But do you feel better? I'm a total idiot when it comes to car keys. I really don't know why. It's bad.

I locked myself out of my apartment once, with my cell phone locked in the car. Yes, I locked myself out of my house and car simultaneously. The only thing I had on me was my server apron, because I was leaving for work, and luckily I had my wine opener - complete with tiny knife - in the apron.

So I rolled a log from the wood pile in the backyard over to the window of the back room, which is where the dog was left in her crate and I had THANKFULLY left the window open for her, so it was the only unlocked window in the house. I balanced on the log and cut a tiny sliver in the side of the screen with my handy wine-opener knife, reached in and pulled the little levers to open the screen, and got the window open enough to clamber inside. Meanwhile my dog was looking at me like this the whole time -

We now have a spare key hidden in the shed.

    I have also -

    - Locked my keys in the car at a gas pump and had to use the phone inside to call my dad to call AAA
    - Locked my keys in my running car at home and walked down a huge hill to call AAA from the gas station, because I managed to get locked out with my wallet somehow
    - Locked my keys, and my DOG in my car in the driveway and called AAA - the lady told me I was high priority because I had an animal in a running car - ya think??
    - Left my dog unattended in the car at Dunkies for 5 minutes, and she pooed all over the backseat, so I had to walk her up the ginormous hill to the house to get cleaning supplies and spend the next hour scrubbing out the backseat and shoving dog poo into the outdoor trash as Dunkies employees looked on

And I've locked myself out of my current apt, past apt, and parent's house countless times. I am accident prone. BF calles me Danger-Prone Daphne. I could write books.

I usually have a house key on my keys and on my wallet so I don't forget anymore.
    Locked out Story:
My cousin got locked out of his car once. He called me dad to see which window my dad would have a spare for (he owns a body shop) and busted that window out to get in.

    FAIL story:
FI, his friend and I were doing a bar crawl and I was the DD of FI's rental car. It was still sort of cold out so outside of a bar there was an ice cream cake. Fi's drunk friend thought it would be funny to steal it, so we did. I went home and FI stayed at his friend's house. When he woke up, he saw that the ice cream cake we had stolen melted all over the seat of the rental car. I guess that's fast acting karma.

When I lived in an apartment with my friend, we always only locked the door handle. The first time I got locked out because of it, I discovered I could very easily break in using a credit card. So I definitely started using the key lock instead - no more getting locked out and no breaking in by anyone else!
