A friend of mine just sent us an invite to his wedding. The RSVP says "the favour of your reply is requested by MM DD, YYYY". But there's nothing else on it.

What should we do? Take a picture of ourselves holding up a sign saying "Yes!" Write a nice note? Turn it into a puzzle for them to solve? It feels silly to let this chance for hijinks go to waste ....

... or maybe ettiquette says there's a specific thing we're supposed to do with it?

    I love your thinking!!!  I think you're supposed to write a note saying how much you'd love to attend or how sad you are that you can't.  I imagine some people would have no idea what to do with it.

    As long as you get your point across (whether or not you're attending) feel free to have some fun with it!  Smile

    I also like that your first thought was to mess with them!  I vote for the puzzle as well.  You should definitely not let the opportunity for hijinks go to waste!

    This is actually the old-fashioned way of requesting a reply.  The usual response would be a handwritten note accepting the invitation and letting them know who's coming.

    But you can be as creative as you'd like, so long as you tell them who's coming (or not).

    It means you are supposed to write your own response. ("John and I can't wait to attend!") It's a very formal way to RSVP. (It's a throwback to the time when wedding invitations didn't include RSVP cards. Instead, guests responded with a written note on their own stationery.)

    Is it a very formal wedding? I've only ever seen that for black-tie weddings.
