**Jamers**

Okay, from one marine mammal lover to another, so since you're vacationing in the caribbean, what is your thoughts on the places like Dolphin Discovery where you pay to swim with dolphins?  I went several years ago to the one on Isla Murjeres and it was a total dream come true.  I don't know if I can express how much Iove dolphins.

Anyhow, so I mentioned it to FI a couple months ago and his response was "You want to support a place that keeps dolphins in captivity?  Isn't that morally wrong, especially since you love them so much?"  I'm sure you can imagine the ginormous pout/whimper/lip quiver that resulted.

What do you think?  On one point, he has a point.  On another (very selfish) point, I SO want to swim with them again!  But I feel so guilty for wanting to!

i totally see his point, but at the same time, i totally agree with you and wanting to do it again. I REALLY want to swim with dolphins while we're down there. I've never done it before, and it would just be a dream come true. Plus, now correct me if I'm wrong, but those dolphins are born into captivity, and so thats the only life they know. And, they probably have it pretty good (at least, thats what I tell myself). So I feel like it isnt TOO bad of a deal.

Side note: when i was little, i was at Seaworld, and i was asked by the trainers if i wanted to go swim with Shamu. I thought they literally meant to swim with SHamu, and said no. My younger cousin did it, and all it was, was going onto the paltform and sitting on Shamu, and getting your picture done. I'm still bitter about that missed opportunity. LOL.

i think it would be a lot more inhumane to try to ride a dolphin in the wild. :)

oh, and have you ever looked into the dolphin trainer for a day at seaworld? it's not too expensive... i'm determined to do it sometime. :)

I honestly do not know if they are born into captivity or caught.  Based on this http://www.hsus.org/marine_mammals/what_are_the_issues/marine_mammals_in_captivity/index.html I'm guessing it's the latter (sadly).  I do know the Dolphin Discovery on Isla Murjeres is a penned off part of the ocean that makes up the "tank" vs. a concrete tank which is good and bad.  Good in the sense that the natural changes in the ocean come, bad because I just imagine how they get when another family of dolphins might swim by on the outside.
