Too many registries for our wedding?

We're having a small wedding (less than 50 people), about 5 hours away from where I live and where my fiance's family lives. My family is out of state and is flying in for it. It's basically a destination wedding. It's just going to be parents, grandparents, siblings, and nephews/nieces.

My family is having a very informal reception/open house a month later because my *huge* family (aunts/uncles/cousins/etc.) wants to come celebrate. I have a feeling that his mom will do the similar thing where we live, for aunts/uncles/cousins/etc. So our small intimate wedding is turning into 3 events, but that's a separate issue :(

So I'm trying to figure out how to handle registering. I know I want to register for a few things at Crate & Barrel. I also wanted to register at one other place: either Bed Bath & Beyond or Macy's. I like that BBB has coupons and would be cheaper for guests, but the more I looked into it a lot of the brands we want are excluded from the coupons anyway.

Is 2 registries too much? 3? Neither one of us has been married before, but we've lived together for 7 years and own a house. Despite that, we could honestly use some basics.

ETA: Thanks, I think I will definitely limit it at 2 registries. Now the question is: Bed Bath & Beyond or Macy's? I know it will depend on the items we want, but assume they are all available at both stores...

  • Are you having a wedding shower? My answer is really dependent on that. I personally would do 2 registries, but I would not side eye if you had 3.

  • Two is fine. I think three should be the limit.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Thanks, I updated my post :) I'm going to try to keep it to 2.  Now my question is...Macy's or Bed Bath & Beyond?

Three is max.  Would Macys have everything you want?  Personally, I don't think BBB is that cheap unless you CAN utilize coupons so I'd look for a wider variety of price points.  We chose BBB over Macy's because after determining which china pattern we wanted, Macys was $129/place setting but BBB was $89.  Simple decision at that point.  We also registered at Kohls and Target.
  • I would do Macy's if the brands you want are excluded from the BBB coupons.  It's almost worse to go in to BBB thinking you can use the coupon and then having to pay full price than just paying full price upfront at Macy's.  Plus Macy's sales are sometimes even better than BBB.

The other thing about Macys is that if you have a credit card with them and link it to your registry you get 10% back on almost everything you buy with it until like 3 months after the wedding (except cosmetics and furniture) and you get 5% back on everything guests buy from your registry.  They send you a gift card once the wedding is over with the value.  Personally I have accumulated at least $100 just in my own spending - I've been buying wedding gifts, christmas gifts, bridesmaids gifts, clothes, etc. exclusively at Macy's to get those rewards.  People started buying seriously from my registry just this past week, and Macy's has been the most popular of four.  We've even had some china bought already so that's another 5% on that value.  The gift card we get from them should be pretty large by the time it's all said and done.

Finally, word on the street is that Macy's has registry completion days where you can get a 20% discount on everything left on your registry instead of just the normal 10% discount that most stores give you.  I'm not married yet so I'm not sure if that's true, but I've heard it separately from 3 or 4 people so I think it's probably the case.

I did register at both Macys and BBB initially and then deleted my BBB registry.  The registry consultant added some incredibly expensive things we told him we didn't want and I found them when we got home.  It was easy to delete but the entire experience was so annoying that we just decided to shift everything from there over to Macy's.  For awhile I was worried it was going to make guests unhappy since BBB is such a popular store for registries, but so far guests have had no problem.  Some brides seem to think that it's BBB or the highway, and that's just not true.
