Our guests as photographers?

Quick background....for our wedding we rented out a lil island in the keys for our immediate family and wedding party to stay at for the weekend....We have already picked the food and rented the tents, tables, bought the centerpieces, favors, etc...So now, I am left with the photography issue...My sister has a studio so we will be having her take our (engagement) photos.  However, to budget on the photos on the wedding day we were thinking of handing out disposable cameras (the nicer ones with flash) to our guests and having them be the "photographers" and then having a camera disposal set up where they can drop them off before they leave.  I dont know how well this will work, Ive just beeing thinking how often does one really go through the wedding photos and actually see their wedding videos after the wedding?  I could make one of those cute photobooks with some of the pictures that we get and keep it in our living room.  What do you all think?  Any and alll suggestions are appreciated. • Thats completley up to you. I would make a Pro Con list if I were you.

The pictures are a big deal to me. I cant wait to get pictures frames and have them hanging in our home. So personally I would never consider doing this.

If there are specific shots you want you may not get them if you hand out the disposable cameras.

You will on the other hand save a lot of money by doing it this way.

Have you thought about possibly hiring a student to do your photos? This way you could still save money and get high quality photos of your wedding day.
  • Bad idea. I read one story on these boards about a girl who had a professional too but who spent x amount of money on disposables and no one took any pictures with them. Most people have their own cameras and would rather take pictures with them. Also, the disposables aren't very good quality and they really can't be trusted with something as important as your wedding pictures.
If you're looking for budget photography then post on the Florida boards to see if anyone knows someone cheap in the Keys.
One last but probably bad idea: my stepsister and her husband have a photography business up here and Maine and I know they really want to get into destination photography. They would probably only charge you travel, which may end up being less than a professional local to the Keys.
Private message me if you want their details- it might be worth asking.
  • The choice is really up to you.  It depends on how important the pictures are to you.  With this disposable camera set-up, it could happen that you will land up with few useable pictures or just a bunch of garbage.  If that outcome is something you could live with, then go for it. The upside is that you might get some fun images.  Don’t forget you are placing the responsibility for pictures with your guests. They might prefer to party and not take pictures. If funky, crappy, pictures are what you want; this might well be a good choice for you.   Good luck!  P.S.  I am a successful full-time videographer in the DC area and after hundreds of events; I feel I am qualified to offer this advice.
