dancing in a mermaid style dress?

Does anyone have experience or know what it's like having to dance in a mermaid style dress?
I found a dress I LOVE and actually looks decent on me! and never thought i'd like a mermaid style dress.
My only worry is dancing in it.......... especially during our father/daughter fun dance.
Please tell me what others think and those of you who have experience!
I also plan on dancing and having fun the whole entire time at the reception with my guests. so i want to be able to move.

Do i need to consider getting a separate reception dress????

Re: dancing in a mermaid style dress?

  • Did you try moving around in it when you tried on the dress?

My dress has a dropped waist, so it's tighter around my hips and thighs and it was a little bit more difficult to move around in, but not to the point that I couldn't move. I think it will take a little getting used to b/c I've never worn a dress like that.

I don't think you need a separate dress for the reception. Wearing comfortable shoes will probably help you move easier.

  • Not all mermaid dresses are created equal. I walked around the boutique a lot in mine and it was fairly easy to move in, but there were other mermaids I tried on that weren't. I'd suggest trying the dress on again so you know for sure. Make sure to walk in it, dance a bit, and try sitting down in it (that was certainly interesting with mine) so you know exactly what its limitations are.

  • Agreed with the PP--not all mermaids are equal.  You're going to have to test out each one.
  • If you cant dance, sit, and function in your dress, then it is too tight.  think about it, a pencil skirt is fitted to the knee, But I wear one to work several days a week and I'm not constricted in any way.

Like the pp suggested, try on as many dresses as you need to find one that works, but there are DEFINITELY mermaid dresses that won't constrict you.
  • Thanks guys!!!! Good to know :)
    Will do.
I also checked out YouTube videos of other brides who had dances posted wearing a mermaid, and they looked fine and could move. I will make sure at the next fitting to try it out in every which way to make sure I am ok :)
