I have been there for an event that was not a wedding and 2 of my friends were there within the last month for a wedding.

Honestly, it is cheap but not nice. You are not permitted to have a tasting at all. They tell you that their reputation precedes them for the food and thus a tasting is not necessary. You cannot have place cards, everyone must stand in line during cocktail hour and a person holding a clip board tells you where to sit. The owner insists on making a speech during the reception whether you want him to or not. No one knew when the couple was cutting the cake and my friend only happened to see it because she was on her way to the bathroom at the time and no one was helping the couple out with the cake cutting. They handed them a knife and said here you go & walked away. The napkins at cocktail hour were in pop-up containers like McDonald's. They did not start bringing out the passed appetizers until in was time to go into the reception so no one got any. Both couples opted to bring their own alcohol so the venue did not provide them glassware, everyone drank from plastic all night. I do not know how they handle it if you use their alcohol package. They were told they were eating "filet" but it was not filet mignon, some other cheaper cut of beef.

And to put this in context. These 2 friends that went to two sperate weddings have never met but both had the same comments.

I agree with PP that Paxon Hollow is a huge step up and depending on what you choose not too much more pp.

They wouldn't make time to open the place to show us, even though we were coming in from out of town.  We drove by just to look.  It looks like it has a pretty outdoor space, but really you can only take pictures there, not have an outdoor ceremony, and it's right next to the street so even if there were a space, the traffic would be too loud.

It looked like there was a chapel of sorts and it seemed very dark.

They didn't seem all that interested in helping us when we were deciding on a venue, I can't imagine they'd be all that accommodating if you actually had your wedding there.

Kings Mill was not accomodating. I didn't look at Paxon Hallow.  Sorry for the confusion.

I thought Kings Mills had a really musty smell when I was there.  And I agree,  it is pretty dark inside.

I just booked my wedding at King's Mill and I Love it! I haven't heard ANYTHING bad about it until I read this website, and I know a lot of people (in my family and friends) that have been at different events there. There IS a place for an outdoor ceremony and TONS of picture opportunities as well as a gorgeous chapel incase it rains. The rooms are beautiful and the pricing is the most reasonable I have seen anywhere. The man I worked with was supper accomadating and nice. It is right off of the street (which I NEVER thought I would like) but everything is on the other side of the building (which is large) so it is actually really private and nice. I know some people mentioned they were not allowed to come visit when they were nearby, but that is because they have a GREAT privacy policy. They do not let ANYONE not invited to an event on the property while the events are going on because they do not want to disturb the bride and groom's ceremony. I did not ask to try the food so I was not denied it, but I have heard very good things about it. Oh and I told him I was doing place cards and he said that was fine. I do not know what the person was talking about when they said napkins out of a popup dispenser unless it was not a wedding, because weddings they do the cloth napkins and they do not make money off of the bar which means it is cheaper for you. I am not doing alcohol so I don't know if it would be served in glassware or plasticware but Ithought I remember glassware being mentioned. This is a lot but I was trying to respond to everyone's negative comments. I love the place, and I loved working with Tom King. Just remember, you almost always get more negative responses from people than positive no matter what you ask about. OH yeah, and it isn't really a dark place. The way there lights are set up, it takes acouple minutes for them to light up all the way. Plus some of the rooms have gorgeous windows that let in natural light for a daytime event.
