OMG so overwhelmed!!

Hello everyone!
I am new to this site, and after reading some of the posts, I realize that Im sOOOfar behind.  We  are planning to get married in April, and the only thing that has been booked is our hall, and I got my dress a couple weeks ago.  I have nothing else done.  I have a florist in mind, but still haven't finalized anything with her!!
Anyone have any suggestions? I feel so overwhelmed and no idea where to start!
My fiance works out in Alberta, so it difficult because he is not always here to help out, or to come with me to search vendors.
Hoping to meet some other brides to be, and possibly get some advice and support!
Thanks

Kim

Don't worry... everything will fall into place.  Best thing to do is buy a note book and make your to-do list and just work on it in chunks and ask for help from friends to do some researching on who they know and loved and spend some nights playing on the internet.

Great thing that you are getting married in April.... since there should be many vendors still free.

Also... use these boards.  Lots of lurkers and lots of helpful people... so stay connected and once you get some things checked off... you will feel so much better...

I think the key thing to do at this point is all the contract items - florist, photographer, DJ, cake, etc. Those are the bigger ticket items that you are in more competition for. Just take it one step at a time, and go ahead and ask here if you need recommendations for your area or need reviews.

When I was looking for vendors I would spend an evening or two just gathering names, looking at websites, and marking my favourites. Then in another evening I'd contact my favourites, asing if their free, pricing, other details. Then I'd arrange meetings with my top choices. Just always take things step by step and focus on one thing at a time and it comes together well.

Have you been to any wedding shows? It is starting the season for them, and it can help a lot to collect a lot of vendor info and speak to a lot of vendors efficiently, and most brides go on their own or with friends or family so it won't be weird if your fiance can't go. I'd recommend on focusing on one or two things at a show though, so that you don't get too overwhelmed.

Are you getting married in a church?
I am not and one thing I wish I had booked a lot earlier is my officiant.

You're in OK shape, don't worry. It's definitely manageable!

Have you looked at the Knot wedding checklist? I found it really helpful to keep me on track. From the Knot home page, you'll see a link on the left navigation bar.

I'd say your top priorities right now are to book a photographer and officiant. With the photographer, you and your FI can review their blogs and portfolios online to see if you like their style. Once you've got these crucial vendors, you'll be in great shape and can just take everything else one at a time.

If your FI is like most men... I bet he won't care in the least about flowers. So you can probably even do that one on your own (as long as he's OK with the price!).

Christmas will be a good time to find BM dresses because a lot of Christmas party dresses are often appropriate for BMs.

With vendor searching and booking, I found that once I got one or two things booked, I got on a roll and a whole bunch of vendors got booked really quickly. Within a month of booking the venues, I had also booked my photographer, videographer, and DJ, and ordered my dress.

Don't worry! You're doing great! Let us know if you'd like any referrals.

Have fun with it - It will all fall into place.  Ask all your friends and family for help I am sure many of them have been through this before or have planned a large event and can put you on to vendors that are good.  If you have booked your hall for the reception ask them for some of their favorite vendors.  If you are referred to someone by the hall they will go above and beyond because they do not want to loose that valuable referral.
Bridesmaids dresses can still be ordered with plenty of time for a wedding in April.
We ordered ours and they arrived in about 4 months so that would bring you to January and you still have lots of time for alterations.

You still have lots of time

    don't worry

I work in the wedding industry so if you want some suggestions as far as good reliable vendors...let me know.

If you still need someone for video and photography,  can suggest some amazing people to work with who aren't overly expensive and provide outstanding service.

    let me know...glad to help!

you've got alot of time- we didn't set the date until May, and our wedding is coming up in November... I didn't really start planning much until July, and we're just ironing out the details now.
    Just relax, it'll be ok.
And remember, it is what you make it.

Don't worry, you have plenty of time to get everything done. My planning timing was similar to HerPrettyBird above me - we got engaged in June 09 but sat on things for a while. We started kind of looking into things in January of this year, actually picked a date and secured a venue in February, and got married on August 28th. And we had plenty of time to get everything done. I agree with PPs that you would work on getting a photographer first. Looking at our "wedding calendar", which I have yet to throw out, we did most of our vendor meetings in April-May. So you have TONS of time.

I also used the checklist on theknot, and it was a great guide for the order in which you should be getting things done. When you first set it up it will tell you that just about everythihng is overdue - ignore this. But just go through things in order and you'll be fine.

If you're stressed out about feeling behind, I would maybe recommend avoiding theknot page for other brides getting married in your month. I looked at mine a couple of times and all these brides were doing "checks" for things that were still a few months out for me. In some places on this board, you'll find some "OMG, my wedding's only 3yrs away and my florist just cancelled on me" type of comments. But most other people here are pretty sane. Smile
