Vendor Reviews: July 1, 2011 Wedding - St. Andrews & 108 Budleigh

First, I just want to say thank you to everyone who has posted on this forum, your comments, suggestions, and opinions helped me tremendously in my planning an OBX wedding while in Oklahoma.

The week in Nags Head and day of worked out better than I could have imagined.  It was such a happy and laid-back time and I'm not sure that any of us wanted to leave... In fact, I think some of the family is already planning a 1-yr anniversary reunion for next year, whether or not we can make it ;)

----------

Ceremony Location:  The Chapel at St. Andrew's Episcopal Nags Head.
We started out thinking we wanted a beach wedding, but in discussions we realized that my husband really wanted a church wedding.  I loved the historic chapel and it removed my worries about weather, sound, seating, etc...  However, the rules!  They are sticklers for rules... no photography during the ceremony.  No video equipment on the other side of the alter. Also, their 'wedding coordinator' didn't listen to us very well (and wasn't a very happy person in general).  Luckily, we brought our own priest from Oklahoma and the service ended up being quite personal.  I don't know if I would recommend using them unless you are a member, as they seem to nickel and dime you for every little thing...

108 Budleigh: We loved it in our first visit and loved it during our reception. It looks beautiful bathed in candlelight! The thing is there really is no one to help out the day of your reception. They gave us a passcode to get in and everything was totally up to us to either set up or move out if didn't need it (e.g., the many extra chairs stacked up in the main room).  This is the biggest reason I wish I had hired a wedding coordinator.  There really wasn't time for me to get over there to help w/set up day of, so we visited earlier in the week, discussed a plan w/some members of the wedding party who went over that morning to set-up. Things didn't look entirely like I envisioned when we showed up for the reception and it bothered me a little more than it should have.  You can get into Budleigh the night before for $250 extra if its not booked for something else, but between the rehearsal / rehearsal dinner I just didn't see it happening...

Catering - Red Sky Cafe:  Amazing. Simply Amazing.  They took care of all the place settings, the bar, and the cake service.  Absolutely everyone told me how great the food was (vegan or otherwise).  Eric K. was easy going from the get go through all the planning and Amy was there the day of to take care of anything I needed.  They were also able to do special drinks at the bar (mojitos, toasted almond, etc) at no extra cost and when I apparently didn't rent enough glasses for mixed drinks they had their own plastic ware to fill in.

Photography - Daniel and Kate Pullen. We loved them both. They are incredibly laid back and work so well together as a team.  They arrived one hour before the ceremony and Daniel went to take pictures of the guys getting ready while Kate came with us... I liked the mixture of formal and informal shots they were able to capture and we had so much fun doing a TTD shoot with them before we left.  We almost forgot to do the cake cutting (had to be reminded by a guest around 10:30 pm)... and Daniel and Kate were still there even though they were only booked for 5 hrs.  They ended up leaving around 11 pm and never complained or even mentioned the extra time they were there!

In case you are interested (or bored), you can find pictures from our day on their blog:  http://danielpullenphotography.blogspot.com/2011/07/7111-patrick-kristin-st-andrews-108.html

[Sorry for the long post, I'll try to hit the rest of the vendors in a follow-up and also be a bit more brief]

Cake:  Patti Cakes, by Emily Patti.  So very, very good.  Emily is full of love and possibly the nicest person I’ve met in my entire life.  She was able to make a dark chocolate vegan cake that no one could tell was even vegan.  We had enough cake for 60 ppl and only 30 guests.  We took most of the almond flavored bottom layer back to beach rental… it was gone by the end of the next day.  I highly recommend her. Makeup/Hair:  Liza Yowell and Stacey Sheetz.  Both were great.  Liza has this incredibly calming presence and her place in Nags Head is like a little oasis.  I really can’t imagine anyone being a better makeup artist.  I had my makeup done around noon and it still looked great at close to midnight… Stacey is a lot of fun and I loved what she was able to do with my hair (totally based on a very rough description of what I was thinking).  Do budget some time for this part of your day though as it took about 1.5-2 hrs to complete my hair. DJ – Soundwavz.  Good job overall and I’m happy that I had a DJ. It was really helpful to have an MC, to make announcements and keep the party going… He kept everyone up and dancing even though we weren’t the ‘typical’ group of top 40 twenty-somethings.  He noticed what got people dancing and stayed with it… ended up being quite a bit of big-band and swing… One hiccup, he called my husband the wrong name (‘Robert’ instead of ‘Patrick’ during our first dance). Rentals -  Shindigs (Alison of 108 Budleigh).  Alison was incredibly easy to work with and her company was a bit cheaper than either Ocean Atlantic or Metro rental.  I was happy with all our items—nothing seemed cheap or out of place. The only issue I had was that it was totally on me to determine the # of items I needed and I guessed a little low on barware… Flowers/Décor:  Holiday House. This is the only vendor that I kind-of wish we went with someone else.  I adored my bouquet and all the other bouquets and bouts for the wedding party, but everything else I’m kind of mixed on… As we got to the month of June, I could tell they were really busy as it took a few days or more to respond to my inquiries.  They created the centerpieces we discussed, but the flowers weren’t a ‘bright’ as I was expecting.  Also, unknown to me, it was totally up to us to light all the candles at the reception.  Much of which wasn’t done until after I got there and noticed it after our first dance—many remained unlit even as we were cleaning up.  Part of the plan was also to hang the bridesmaids’ bouquets on the railing of the stairs… this wasn’t done and no one was around to hand the bouquets to – I guess that was up to us to do… Finally, even though we discussed the week of the wedding adding flowers on the cake, they didn’t do it.  I still don’t know why. If anyone needs links or more information about anyone feel free to ask!

Congrats on your marriage!  My FI and myself actually have an appointment and tasting with Red Sky the week we are down there in September.  Been looking at their menu which is saved on my desktop at work for months now.  Also have an appointment and tasting with Coastal Provisions as well.  Glad your day was special!

Absolutely beautiful!  I was very teary-eyed while looking at your pictures :)

Congratulations to the both of you!  :)

I am also using 108 Budleigh and was curious if you included any decor on the staircase and if so, what did you use?  I plan on placing candles on anything that will stand still to create a very romantic atmosphere.  Just curious if I should do more?

    Thanks so much!

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments...

OBX:  In my opinion, the candles are enough... we had some ribbons in front of the cake area that were suppose to have the bridesmaids bouquets, but they were never put up there and I didn't miss it all that much...  Outside:  There are two small patio tables w/ 2 chairs each I think.  We added 3 tables w/4 chairs each that 108 Budleigh has in stock, rented a few extra tablecloths and added some ikea lanterns...

Thank you SO much for all the good information on 108 Budleigh!  First thing, have lots of people to help get decor done early.  Second, have someone (or a few people) in charge of lighting all the candles upon arrival at reception site.

I think we are doing the same thing, a few pieces of decor on the railings near the cake, tons of candles, and paper lanterns hanging outside on the terrace.
