Is this tacky?

I have so-so handwriting. My FI has terrible, terrible handwriting. None of my bridesmaids have the best handwriting either. My mom's is alright, but not fantastic enough for me to want her to do this...

We're going to have about 150 escort cards to write out - I'm toying with the idea of printing out the names on clear labels and putting them on the cards, and then writing the table numbers on the inside of the card after we've done the table arrangements.  Is that okay? Or do I suck it up and handwrite each card, even though I won't really like how all the writing will look?

The cards that I'm thinking about getting are light blue with black/silver flourishes on the side. They fold over for the table number to be written on the inside and then name to be on the outside. If I use a clear lable, it shouldn't be all that noticeable - I'm thinking. Hoping.

None of the cards I've found in stores can be run through a computer. The ones on Vistaprint have to be ordered blank to get the bulk pricing. I don't know what I should do...

Re: Is this tacky?

  • I've seen a ton at hobby lobby and Michael's that can be run through the printer.

Really? That's where I looked! All they had were little packs that were individual cards and if you ran them through a printer, they'd get all eaten up and torn. I'll have to go look again. Do you know if they were the folded kind where you can write the table number on the inside?

  • I've seen folded ones at Target.
  • I think labels would just be an added expense.  I do not have great hand writing but I used it for the escort cards...trust me, escort cards are not that important...somebody might save your invitation or your program but nobody will save an escort card so I honestly think handwriting them is just fine.

BUT printing them SAVES SO MUCH TIME so I would just buy full sheet card stock, type names out and cut them out (you can use a paper cutter they sell at Michaels and Hobby Lobby in the scrap booking dept)

  • I'd print them out. It saves you money AND writer's cramp.

  • I wouldn't sweat this.  PPs have given great ideas.  But for me, as long as I am properly fed, liquored, seated, and not ceremony/reception-gapped, I don't care if the escort cards are written in orange crayon.
  • Why not instead of escort cards you have a seating chart?  That way you won't have 150 little cards lying around just asking to be lost, misplaced, or put out of order.  It will also save you from having another table to cover with a linen.  I have been to many weddings (and I had one at my own) that used a seating chart and guests had no problems finding their name and table number.

I would say the only reason to have escort cards is if you were having your guests pick a dinner option and need to have it specified on the card for the wait staff.

  • Meh, I'd just hand write them. Do a few at a time and take your time and they will be neat enough. Thinking back to the last three weddings I went to this year (Feb, March, May)...I didn't take the card with me and I couldn't for the life of me tell you what my name looked like on it. Or, print them if you want.

  • I used a stencil for ours. It took a long time since I wrote really lightly in pencil and then went over it with a gold marker, but I like the way they turned out. Depends how much time you want to dedicate to it.
  • We ran ours through the printer, and loved how they turned out.  I think we bought them at Michael's.
  • I dont think the clear labels are tacky....however I just made some up for some folders at home and they all ran!  yup the ink come right off if you rub it no matter that i left them to dry overnight.  Just print them, saves you time, $$ and sanity.  No one cares as long as they know where they should go for food and booze.

Best of luck and happy planning!

  • I dont think its tacky for the escort cards at all. It all comes down to preference. If you know you wont be happy with them being written out, just print them. We did it for my sisters wedding and it was so easy and fast.

  • I think it would look better if you hand-wrote them despite not having the best penmanship. Clear labels, no matter how matte they are, will probably show. I agree that you could try to get printable ones elsewhere, but that seems wasteful considering that you've already purchased them. What if you printed everyone's names in a pretty font on another coordinating color of paper and cut those out to glue onto the place cards, using your existing cards as a sort of border?
