Aveda Institute

Has anyone ever used the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis for bridal party hair and makeup? Is this a horrible idea or is it a good way to save some $$?

Appreciate any insight that anyone might have!

My sister considered it for the wedding party because it was super reasonable for updos and makeup if we wanted it!  She opted to her regular stylist take care of hers since she had a very specific style that she wanted.  Unfortunately, they were closed on the day of her wedding, so had a friend's sister do it instead.  I've had haircuts and hair color done there before and really enjoyed my experience and the results... but the only downside is that it takes a lot longer at Aveda than at a typical salon since the students usually need to run things by their instructors several times.

If you're picky about how you want your own hair and makeup done, I'd recommend splurging on yourself and investing in an experienced stylist that does hair, makeup and trials!  A lot of ladies on here go with Smart and Chic.  They just opened their new studio location which is right down the street from Aveda Institute.

Us bridesmaids usually aren't too picky about our hair and makeup... especially if it's more reasonably priced than a standard salon :)

I love Aveda for my haircuts and go there regularly--since they have instructors check everything, things always turn out great. I think the students try extra, extra hard to make the bride's hair perfect since they are new to it, so I'm guessing it would turn out great.

My only thought would be to get a few other quotes at reasonably priced salons (I'm sure folks here could recommend some).  When I looked at their updos, I was surprised that they were not that much less than many other places..if the price isn't much better, you might just want to go with a professional salon instead, given the time factor.

    Good luck!

As much as I love Aveda Institute, I would probably stay clear on a day that you have a timeline.  I love getting my hair cut there, but I've had it take between 45 minutes and 2 1/2 hours.  And, honestly, the last time I got my hair cut there, it turned out a hot mess.  My hair isn't that difficult to screw up since it's just one length and straight.  I'm thinking I got a new new newbie.  IMHO, I would go back to get my hair cut again, but I don't think it's worth saving a few bucks on your wedding day.  If one girl's hair takes 2-3 hrs, it might screw with your pictures, etc.

    Hello!!!

I am a former student of Aveda Institute, yes it is an AMAZING place to pamper yourself for any occasion, however steer clear of it on your wedding day!!!  It could take 2 hours just for your hair, depending on how far along the student is maybe even longer.  And you cannot be gaurnteed a soon to be graduate.  And makeup could take a long time too.  There are appointments yes, but it is MAD chaos there in the morning you might be waiting a little while too.  If you or any of your bridesmaids are picky it may not be the best place to go either.  After all they are students, they are learning, and trust me it is NOT EASY at first to learn updo's as well as have the stress of doing a bride.  I would suggest somewhere else... but go there for everything else!!!

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! I've had good experiences there but I got my hair colored there and I was literally there for 6 hours.

Wow, thank you for all of the great feedback, this is really helpful! I agree - I need to find somewhere else for hair and makeup. Right now I'm considering Bellagala but have some more research to do.

Thanks so much for the feedback - what a helpful community!
