Hawaii

new knottie member :) :)

Hi ladies just wanted to say I've been a lurker on the Hawaiin boards for a few months now and decided I would like to join cuz all you ladies seem so wonderfully awesome and helpful and just an all around great group of ladies :) My fiance and I have been together 8 years going on 9 years this March, he proposed on Christmas Eve night 2010 so we have been engaged for a year and just moved in together into our own place in September of 2011. With both of us paying rent and house bills and personal bills its been pretty tough to try and save but starting next month we are going to start putting aside a certain amount of money from our pay checks every two weeks I figure better late than never. lol. I always dreamed of having a big gorgeous wedding here in my hometown with all my family and friends but than one day I came across a message someone had posted about having a DW and I thought how awesome it would be to get married to my one and only love in Hawaii!!!  We both have rather small families and the thing about our families is that my family has its own drama and does not always get along and his family is the same way they are not all that close anymore so we thought why have a big huge wedding it just doesn't make sense to us you know what I mean? Plus we will be paying for everything on our own. We mentioned Hawaii for our honeymoon I mean hey if we can't have a big ol' wedding than why not splurge on the honeymoon in Hawaii and thats where I got the idea that we should just get married out there too! When I told him about my idea he said it sounds great and that he's on board for whatever I want to do :) I think I'm leaning towards Maui but definitely keeping my eyes and options open to the other beautiful islands of Hawaii. I am also looking into getting married late 2013  or spring of 2014 I know its a long way away but definitely doesn't hurt to start getting different ideas and hearing ALL of your wonderful stories. I really look forward to getting to know you ladies :) I apologize for the very long post, ooooopsy. lol

  • Welcome and congrats! Your wedding plans almost sound like how mine happened. We decided to finally take our vacation in Hawaii this year and while planning it we decided to get married there. We didn't want a big wedding cause we were both married before, so this made perfect sense to us. In all reality, it's not really costing much more, well if I don't stop adding extras to my package! Lol. For my first wedding I did what you plan to do, I had a certain amount of my paycheck automatically transferred into my savings account so I would never miss the money, it took me 2 years to save but it was worth it to have the day I wanted! Maui is a beautiful island but I chose Oahu for the simple reason that I have to see the Pearl Harbor memorial and we didn't want to pay extra to jump islands. Hopefully on an anniversary we will get there. Good luck with planning and let us know how it's going!

  • Welcome and congratulations!

I am eloping to Maui in just under a month.  We too planned our vacation and then decided to get married while we are there.

I have never been to Hawaii but it sounds and looks so beautiful I can't wait!  I think anywhere you pick in Hawaii is going to be beautiful.

Please keep us up-to-date as your planning proceeds!

  •  Thank you so much girls :) My planning may go slow like a turtle but I'll defitely keep you ladies posted. Its crazy how many options are out there and you have so much to choose from. I can't wait to see pics of your wedding days. I sure wish I was getting married this year too but sigh thats just not possible for us right now with money and all. One question I have is do you guys have an estimate of how much the flight tickets are? Right now it would be my fiance and I and like 6 of our closest good friends who will be attending and celebrating the day with us :) If you awesome girls dont wanna answer my ticket question it's okay I don't mind but I'm just wondering what the price range is per ticket per person. I would love for my sisters and nieces and nephew to be there but I just have no idea on how expensive the tickets can get.

  • I am not sure where you live.  I am in BC, Canada.  We live in a very small remote town so our biggest expense is to get to Vancouver or Seattle.  We usually do that portion by airmiles.  I think our flights return from Seattle to Maui were about $700-800 but I am not positive my FI does all the vacation booking.

  • Flights will depend on where you're coming from and what seat sale are going on at the moment.  Prices from Edmonton AB were anywhere between ~$750 - $2000 for the same flights depending on what the airlines felt like charging that day.  Start watching prices a few months before you plan to book so you can get an idea of what they bottom out at.  Flights are usually released about 1 year in advance.  You've got lots of time to scope out good deals

  • Hi and welcome.  Looking forward to reading more about your wedding as the plans form.
  • I just bought our tickets to go back to Maui for our Anniversary and from Alaska to Honolulu they are running about $800pp and then you have to consider the cost of a 'hop' flight from Oahu to Maui if Maui is where you choose to get married.  The hop tickets are about $325 round trip for 2 adults.

  • Aloha and congratulations! This is a great board with lots of helpful information. Long engagements can be good.  Many of us on here have had them or are in the middle of a long engagement. If you have any questions, let us know.  Good luck on all your planning.  Oh and I say go do Maui!
  • Welcome!! I'm a newbie too and we recently decided to heck with all the plans and drama lets go to HI and get married/have our honeymoom. We too are paying for everything ourselves so at the end of the day do we want a fabulous wedding/honeymoon in Hawaii or do we want to pay for 100 of our friends to have dinner and drinks on us? No brainer. Our immediate fmaily is coming a about 2 of our friends and I just know it's going to be perfect.

We have about the same time line, June 2013 is when we are plannin ours. this board has been really helpful so far :)

Wow! That's a lot.  Ours from Portland on Hawaiian to Maui were just over $1000 for both tickets round trip.
  • I'm very late to the thread, but welcome to the board!

Ticket prices definitely vary based on your origin.  For us on the West Coast, tickets are available for about $400/pp, and a few airlines fly direct to Maui without a layover in Oahu.  We flew our photographer from the East Coast and their flights were about $700/pp.  We're pretty maniacal about searching on Kayak and keeping tabs on prices and you can usually find a pretty good deal.

Good luck with all your planning.  Looking forward to hearing more about your plans as they evolve.

  • Aloha fellow newbie!

My FI and I had a long engagement as well, 5yrs, and when we get hitched it will be 10days before the 6yr mark lol. We're getting married on Oahu and the service we found was really well priced for everything that's included.  PM me if you want details. We're paying for everything ourselves so after tracking our spending for 3 mos. we were able to see where we could cut back and we started a Wedding Savings acct with our bank with auto deposits so we don't over spend.  We're flying out of San Jose CA and from what I've found it's about $1320 roundtrip for both of us on Hawaiian Airlines. It's all based on where you're flying from.  Best of luck to you and keep us posted!

  • Thank you sooooooo much for all the replies and responses. We live in Indiana I just wanted to get a feel of what the ticket prices range from. I will definitely be keeping an eye out and checking the flight prices periodically. I am trying to decide between having the ceremony on the beach or on a lawn overlooking the beach. I've looked at pictures of both and honestly they both look amazing and beautiful thats why its so hard to choose. Any suggestions on vendors or places to have the reception? I don't think there will be more than 10 people attending so it will be a rather small gathering but I would still love to have dancing, good music and great food since the guests will be flying so far to celebrate the day with us :) I am open to any all all suggestions from you awesome girls. Since I am new to this planning I don't even know where to begin. I too would love to hear about your planning and your big day for you girls who already got married! Thanks a bunch :)
