Affordable Honeymoon?

After paying for wedding stuff, there will not be that much money left in the budget for a honeymoon, so I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for a cheaper place to go for a honeymoon.  My only requirement is that is has a beach.  It doesn't have to be tropical (although that would be really nice!) and it doesn't have to be outside of the United States.

We might be able to use my fiance's credit card air travel miles to pay for the flight (I'll have to get him to check on that with the credit card company).  If not, we'll have to look into going someplace close enough to drive to.  We live in Pennsylvania and I'm not opposed to driving as much as 7-8 hours to get someplace.

My main concern is the hotel being affordable.  If anyone has ideas of affordable destinations/ affordable hotels, I'm open to suggestions!

  • So it looks like your honeymoon is in July based on your time line?

Tropical = hot, almost too hot in the southern US. You could look into the east coast of the US in the mid-Atlantic northern areas like Virginia Beach, New Jersey shore......Charleston SC is lovely and has a lot of history, but may be really hot and humid.

Upstate NY has lovely lakes, wine country, pretty B&B's that are often cheaper than chain hotels. We here in Michigan would put our beaches on the Great Lakes up against any ocean beach.......and it's fresh water. Mackinac Island is lovely, but the hotels are pricey. You could find somewhere on the southern side of the Mackinac Bridge and take a ferry over to Mackinac Island.  Petoskey Michigan is cheaper, and Saugatuck (on the western shore, on Lake Michigan) is adorable and very much like New England tourist towns. The Lake Erie shore in Ohio has some lovely island areas and beaches, and if you like amusement parks, Cedar Point in Sandusky is one of the best in the country. They have a beach there, water park too.

Look into some of the above, and use www.tripadvisor.com for hotels. I have used them for years, they have reviews by real guests, and the prices and websites for the locations that are reviewed.
  • Thanks so much!  Our wedding is June 22 so our honeymoon would be in the end of June.  I never thought of a lake beach, but it sounds nice and probably less "rough" than the ocean.  One time fiance and I went to the Jersey Shore and the waves were so huge, we couldn't even go into the water!  I tried, but I got knocked over and swallowed a lot of water, so we gave up and hung out on the boardwalk, LOL!

  • I'm also from Michigan and I completely agree with Sue. I live in the Upper Peninsula and if you are looking for a very natural setting taking a trip around the U.P of Michigan is a great option! The prices are very good and there is plenty to see and experience. Mackinaw island is a great stop and is a gateway to the U.P. so you can visit there and then continue on your journey north. I would suggest Pictured Rocks in Munising, SugarLoaf and Presque Isle in Marquette, the Soo Locks, and the Porcupine Mountains up near Houghton. If you need any specific hotels to stay with or any other information feel free to private message me! Good luck with your honeymoon and wedding planning!

  • Cape Cod would be great, and it's driveable from PA.  The waves can be rough sometimes on the ocean side, but there are calmer bay-side beaches as well.
  • You can also use air miles to get hotels for free, often these are better deals as flights have high taxes and fees.

    How about Newport, RI.
  • We are planning on using our credit card rewards as well. It's a great way to put money towards your honey moon while spending expenses for the wedding.
  • I've found some really great deals to the Playa Del Carmen and Cancun area. It is beautiful there! Just don't go during spring break season ;)
  • The Outer Banks is a nice quiet beachy area that you might enjoy within driving distance of your area (a little bit of a hike).  I think there are pretty lakes in the Adorondaks, but they might be too chilly for swimming at the end of June (as would anything in New England).

Check on those credit card miles.  FI and I are despearately trying to rack up some miles between now and the end of September (when his debit card discontinues the program).  When all is said and done we will just have enough for 1 ticket to Europe (non-honeymoon trip).  Better than nothing I guess.

Also remember that you should cash in any reward miles early to ensure that you get the flights that you want.  I know that with airlines and busier times we usually cash in reward travel to popular destinations (like the Caribbean or Europe) about 6 months out.
