Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Soul Music @ Reception

So my FI & I are working on squaring away our music for the reception, he's a music producer & DJ so I'm pretty much letting the expert handle it! We own a store together & our neighbor is a record store whom we hang out with sometimes. The guys at the record store also do Soul Night at a local bar (& I LOVE soul music)- they have been selling out the shows more than a week ahead of time, everytime, and people are always talking about the night afterwards. We've been a few times & I absolutley loved it- people seriously get down to soul! So we were thinking about having them as our reception band (our theme is 50/60's casual, and the reception is at a brewery's beer garden). I would think this would go over well with the older people in the crowd as well as the youngsters like me, hearing their favorite oldies again, but what do you ladies think? Is Soul Night Funk music (no live band, just turntables & good ol vinyl) acceptable for a casual reception? Would you be excited or bummed if that was the only music we were playing (neither of us are top100 fans so the popular new music wouldn't be an option anyway)...    http://youtu.be/sdtWtamNJv8 <--- link to youtube if you want a better idea of their music

Re: Soul Music @ Reception

  • I would have a variety of music. I don't mind that music really overall, but I would get tired of hearing the exact same kind of music all night. Also, if anyone hates it, you've kind of alienated them and they will probably leave early.

I attended a wedding where the bride was Polish. I think it would have been neat to play a few songs from her culture, but that is ALL they played ALL night long. Nothing but Polish music. The only people dancing were a small group of her Polish relatives and everyone else either sat around or left early. I think mixing in music you love or that is part of your culture is good, but I would be careful to not ONLY play one type of music if you want people out dancing.
