Grrrr!

So my FMIL has really stringy, long hair and parts in down the middle, covering half her face. I offered to pay for a trip to the salon as a gift for a day if pampering to get ready for the wedding. She responded that her hair and makeup always looks good the way she does it. Any other way I can try to convince her to get her hair done for the wedding?

Re: Grrrr!

  • your MIL is clearly happy with her appearance; let it go.
  • Ditto Kate. And by the way, your post makes you seem rather shallow. I don't care for my MIL's sense of (or maybe lack of) style, but I would never dream of suggesting she change the way she looks.

  • No. You shouldn't be commenting on her appearance. She likes the way she looks, which is all that matters. I mean, would you like if someone said, "I don't care for the way you wear your hair. Let's fix it." I know you didn't say that, but I just want to show that there isn't anything else you can do. You need to let this go.

  • She is an adult and can wear her hair and makeup any way that she pleases.

  • Ditto everyone else.  You made an offer, she declined.  She is happy with her appearance so you should be too.  This shouldn't be that important to you.
  • Ditto PPs. Your FMIL may decide that she wants to get her hair and make-up done for the wedding because she wants to look special, or she may want to look like herself and leave her hair the way she always wears it. Either way, it's not your concern. I'm sure if you're planning a wedding there are plenty of other details you can focus on. ;)

  • You are acting like one of those controlling brides. I would never been a part of anyone's day if they had unnecessary demands like that. You should apologize to your FMIL.
