Most venues I saw offered 4 hour receptions. The venue I chose is a six hour reception. Our ceremony is at a church so that's not a apart of the six hours.
Oue ceremony was at 330, and our reception, which was at the same location, was from 4 to midnight. In my circle, having an eight hour reception like this is the norm, but I think it is longer than average overall.
I had a 7 1/2 hour reception (4pm - 11:30pm). We had a noon ceremony (1 hr. 45 min), cocktail hour at my inlaws right after the ceremony (10 min. distance) and then dinner at 5.
on average, I would say most receptions are 3-5 hours. Our ceremony was at 3, cocktail hour 3:30-4:30 (the reception was at the same location as ceremony). Dinner was at 4:30 and reception was over at 9pm, but most people were gone by about 8:15, give or take.

we had a 90 minute cocktail hour and then a 4 hour reception-but there were still people milling around for a bit after it ended for maybe 30-45 mins.
