Sears?

Hi ladies! It's about that time that we should be registering (about 9 months out) so we're debating where to register. My FI mentioned he would like to register at Sears. Has anyone had any experiences (good or bad) with a Sears registry? Thanks in advance!

I don't have any experience with registering for Sears but I would be concerned about their financial status. They are listed as one of the companies that may fail in 2012. I know they are planning on closing several stores this year.

I am registered at Sears (for a few things...not doing a big registry) and I don't remember having any problems...my wedding is in April though...like PPs said if you have awhile they might be closed before your wedding!

What is it exactly that you'd want to register for at Sears? I would be hesitant because they are closing of many their stores. Have you thought about an Amazon universal registry? You can put just about anything online on that registry.

I personally don't think Sears has any household items that can't be bought somewhere else. So I'd take my business elsewhere.

The only thing I can think of that Sears stocks that you couldn't find at Kohls or Macys or something like that is power tools, but if that's what you're interested in, why not have two registries - one for tools at Home Depot or Lowes, and then one for more traditional housewares at Macys or Kohls or JC Penny's or Target (all of which are roughly in the Sears price range and not headed towards bankruptcy)?

Thanks ladies!

I asked FI what he had in mind at Sears, and he said he wasn't sure. He just feels like we have a lot of the typical houseware items and thought Sears would be a little bit broader (probably for the tools). We'll definitely have one either at BBB or Kohl's. Lowes doesn't have a registry, and I've heard some negative things about Home Depot's registry, but I'm sure we'll find something.

Not necessarily. Fortunoffs stopped accepting gift cards as payment without notice when they declared bankruptcy. People were pissed.

<div>Maybe just register for the tools only at Sears, and then register for everything else somewhere else - that way, if Sears does go under (and as a PP pointed out, these things tend to happen quickly and with little warning - remember how fast Circuit City shut down? Borders too!), the majority of your registry won't be affected.</div>

Both of my sister-in-laws registered at Sears. They received multiple gifts of the same item because they were never taken off the registry. One got three hand mixers at a single shower.

They were talking about that on the radio this morning. One girl got a gift card for Borders for Christmas...this year! Hello, the place is closed! Obviously someone regifted & didn't think. If you go to Borders.com, it redirects to Barnes & Noble. Harsh.

Oooh but that's brilliant marketing on behalf of B&N. I hadn't noticed that before!

If you want tools and things, Sears is a better bet than Home Depot and Lowe's, which don't really have registries, but I would be leery of their financial status. Especially if you think your guests are likely to give Sears gifts cards when they see that is where you're registered.

<div>It's actually not "marketing" - B&N legitimately bought Borders' domain name, customer list, email list, etc. as part of the bankruptcy (when companies go into bankruptcy, they're required by law to sell their assets to whoever will buy them, and B&N snapped up all of the Internet stuff).</div>

a girl on our May board recently registered at Sears and had a terrible experience.

i personally refuse to shop at Sears (as well as my family & FI's family and many of our friends) because their customer service is in the toilet, anything we've ever ordered never came on time and we've never managed to shop there without some kind of problem.

i Lowes, but unfortunately they do not do wedding registries

We registered at Sears -- we didn't have a ton of guidance -- but we were able to register...

FI wanted craftman tools -- a lot of them come with lifetime warranties against damage -- and that doesn't matter of sears goes under or not...it's through craftman, not sears. Craftman tools are great tools because of that fact...so depending on how much your FI is into nice tools (FI is a handy man, fixes our cars, house, etc etc) I say go for it. I don't much about tools -- but know the name craftman for sure!
