Traditional registry vs. just getting cash

My fiance and I have lived together in our house for over 5 years so we don't need the traditional registry. I did register for a little one for the bridal shower. My dilema is that we would just prefer good ole cash but don't know how to word it to our guests on the invitiation or on our website. We were going to do a honeymoon registry but I didn't like the set up and how they charged additional money just to send us a check. I know there are a lot of people that think asking for cash is tacky but honestly we just  don't need the big traditional registry. any suggestions on how we can word our registry? any help would be great. Thanks!

Re: Traditional registry vs. just getting cash

  • Just do a small registry and tell your friends and family that you are close to that you prefer cash. They should get the word around.

  • I did do a small registry so at least we have something. From what I am reading its maybe best to just have the Little registry and hopefully it'll just be implied to give cash.
  • There will always be people who regardless of what you register for, or don't register for, will buy you a gift.  They just don't like to give cash.

Cash is always an acceptable gift, and everyone knows that.  You don't ask for it.  By not registering, or not registering for much, you are telling people that there are not too many things you need right now.  Most of them will get the hint, others wouldn't give you cash even if you put a big fancy letter about needing cash in your invitation (or, rather, especially wouldn't in that case).

  • You've made the small registry - that's how you ask for cash.

You do NOT in any form write anywhere "My fiancé and I want good ole cash!"  That's so rude.

However, if people ask you directly, you are free to say "We're saving for our honeymoon!" or whatever.  But, you still can't say "We need cash."

    See the subtly?
  • if you dont register people will either give you a gift of their choice or cash. you may not ask for cash in any way.

and i doubt that you dont need to upgrade anything in your house after 5 years. sheets, towels, pans--they always need replacing/upgrading.

I feel like I am constantly repeating myself on this topic. LOL I have lived with my DH for about 6.5 years, not to mention that between the two of us, in some form, we have owned a home since 1989. I can think of a ton of things that we could ask for on a registry, either in the form of upgrades or just new gadgets that come out from time to time. I usually just end up asking for that stuff at Christmas since we obviously don't get married every year! :) Anyway, like the others said, keep the registry you have small and people will get the point.

  • Thanks for all the advice... I think I will just be keeping my small registry and having just that listed on the website and invite. We aren't having a huge wedding so everyone that will be there will be our closest family and friends. There isn't really a need to spread the word about just wanting cash. Everyone will get the clue.  Thanks again!

  • It's still tacky to list your small registry on the invite-invites should never ever have registry info included, unless it's a shower (thrown by someone else for you).
