update :(

Hi ladies!

H and I are back from Columbus. Needless to say, we are both very disappointed and frustrated. H did not get the promotion despite them leading him on like he had it. I am furious that they brought us all the way up there just to call him and tell him when we were driving yesterday that he didn't get it. WTF?

He wants to just put in his 2wks notice here and move back either when our lease is up or before. I hate for both of us to be out of a job (even though my interviews went well) since we will still have bills to pay. We don't want to be here any more and it is too hard to search for a job when you already have one. Both of his co-workers have tons on vacation time they take whenever they want and he basically is lowest on the priority list should a company want him to come home for an interview.

Sorry for the vent. And thanks for all the well wishes and prayers.

Sorry to hear about that.  It really stinks. I hope you get some good news from the place that you interviewed with.  I'm sure that it would make things a lot easier for one of you to have a job when you move back.  Good luck with everything.

Well, I am a teacher. I am not certified yet, though. That is what I was going to school for before I moved down here to be with him.

And H is an engineer. His degree is basically a blend of computer and electrical engineering if that makes any sense.

I wish I knew of something available in those fields. FH works for Bob Evans as a manager. They start in the mid $30s if you have a college degree and the benefits are fantastic (medical, dental, eye, 401, etc.). Plus, they get quarterly bonuses based on performation. Might be an option if you guys move and you haven't found anything, at least for a while until you do find a teaching job you're interested in.

Awww Missy I'm so sorry :(  I know exactly how you feel.  It sucks when people basically lead you on and think you have the job and then for whatever reason they say no.  It's awful.  I know this is so incredibly cliche, but it's the truth...that job was not meant to be and there's something else out there for your husband.  Hopefully you hear good news on your end.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

    Thanks ladies.

Kelly - I will have him check into Bob Evans. He does have a 4 yr degree but needs more experience on the programming and code side of things. He just needs to find something where he can grow and learn and everyone seems to want either an advanced degree and/or 6+ years of experience. It just sucks.

I think he will find something, it is just that we are both so down right now. And it is hard for me to stay positive for him b/c he thinks it is all his fault esp if I can't go back to school right away after we move back if I am busting my butt trying to support us.

My sister works for intel out in phoenix. She is an industrial and systems engineer with a four year degree. She told me that they were handing out flyers saying they were building a new factory and are looking for engineers or basically anyone with a science degree to train for jobs. If your open to relocating I would look into intel. I know she started about 5 years ago at I think 60K or maybe it was more...not sure but it was her first job out of OSU. Although she did do an internship with them in college but it is worth a shot to look into.

That is just it, we really want to get back home to Ohio or at least somewhere close. We are far enough away as it is right now.

Thanks for the info though. I suppose it wouldn't hurt for him to look into it. It sounds right up his alley and the pay rate he is looking for.

I'm not sure if he has looked into Honda in marysville... But they hired a friend of mine with an electrical engineering degree right out of college a few years ago. I also know an engineer that works for the limited in Columbus. Has he looked into either of those??

I have been trying to get him to look there. My Godmother works for the Limited, so maybe I should see if there is anything she can do for him even though she is not in the same field.

Your H could try WPAFB near Springfield/Dayton - I know it's a little outside of Columbus, but I thought you guys were from the London area anyways (or was that just where your wedding was?)...

Anyways, I went to a small engineering school out in IN, and I know of at least two people that graduated recently and now work at WPAFB, if that helps.  Granted, now might not be the time to try to get a gov't job :-/

Yeah, H's parents live in London and we were married out there. We both consider ourselves from central Ohio b/c no one knows where London is. Lol.

He has tried Wright Patt, but I am not sure if he has looked recently. He went to DeVry University, which is supposed to be a really good engineering school.

Try Bob Evans corporate, they hire IT but I don't know if they have openings now. Try OSU,, State of Ohio and Franklin County, Ohio Health (RIverside and other hospitals) for IT jobs.

Has he talked to a head hunter up here?  Or tried this site https://ohiomeansjobs.com/omj/

Would any of these jobs fit? http://www.oclc.org/us/en/careers/hub/view/default.htm

  • edited December 2011
Thanks, Skippy. I will definitely have him check out that site. I am not sure if he is qualified yet for any of the jobs at OCLC, but I am leaving it on my computer so he can check for himself.

A headhunter is something I have tried telling him to check into. That is probably the next step. And if I find a job first, then I might move back before him.

I am currently hiring software engineers.  However my company is located just east of Zanesville.  If he doesn't mind the commute and is interested in that type of work, send me a PM. :)

Missy some of the major companies, like JP Morgan Chase, only hire through headhunters. You can send them resume's til you are blew in the face and it won't matter - they only interview people prvided to them through headhunters and for Chase it is a specific headhunter firm but I can't recall the name.

Oh - try Cardinal Health in Dublin,  Limited, Abercrombie & Fitch.  Chemical Abstracts is/was hiring IT, they have a bunch of people all retiring at the same time.
  • edited December 2011
skippy - I did not know that about JP Morgan Chase. They have offices right around the corner from my parents house. H will have to do some research into them if that is something he is interested in.

I have told him to try Cardinal Health and Ross/Abbot Labs. One of the parents of a girl in my old class worked for Ross and they were super flexible with her schedule and the kids, etc.

Thank you ladies for all of your help!

I'm talking Chase IT - not a bank brach. Chase has several HUGE administrative and IT buildings here. One in the Polaris area, another on Cleveland Avenue north of 270.

Gotcha. That would be perfect. My parents live in the Polaris area and I know right where that one is. And my Grandma used to work at the one off of Cleveland Ave before she retired.

Nationwide, Worthington Industries, Cardinal Health, Huntington, Ohio State (the University has tooooonnnnnssss of jobs), AEP, Columbia Gas... we have lots here, maybe they're hiring?  Try www.indeed.com for the job search if you haven't already - it pulls from all kinds of different search engines and I've had luck with it in the past.  Good luck!
