Does the treadmill ever hurt your knees?

I am an outside runner and don't use the treadmill often. Last night it was very icy outside so I ran 3 miles on the treadmill (with a 1.0% incline). I ran outside this morning and now my knee is really hurting.

I've been nursing mild runner's knee (with ice, ibuprofen, rest) so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. But it seems like the treadmill kicked it up a notch. Could it be that the inability to self regulate my pace put extra stress on my knee?

Anyone else ever sore after the treadmill? TIA!

Edit: to correct my knee issue

Re: Does the treadmill ever hurt your knees?

  • The nice thing about running outside is that you're constantly varying your pace and incline.  That means you're constantly using your muscles differently.  When you run on the treadmill, you use the muscles the same way the whole time unless you're changing your speed and incline.  Since "runner's knee" is an overuse injury, I'd imagine not varying things could definitely make it angry.

  • I'm also an outdoor runner and treadmills hurt my knees real bad. Treadmills freak me out, I'm pretty sure I run different on them. I won't do more than like 2 miles on them ever.

  • I hate running on the treadmill.  I can tell that my form is off the entire time and I tend to be sore afterward.

  • I've religiously run on treadmills in the winter in the past even though I'm typically an outdoor runner.  They sometimes bother my knees but mostly my shins.  This winter I've cut down my training drastically to avoid the dreadmill.

With that said, the elliptical can bother my knees as well...
  • I have discovered that it's MUCH easier to be a heel slammer/thruster on a tredmill.. you may have been without even realizing. The only way to get around it for ME is to bump up the incline a good amount...  :/
  • Thanks everyone! I'm definitely going to try the random hill setting the next time I have to run inside.
