To bustle or not to bustle

Is it a necessity, does it change the shape of the dress?

Re: To bustle or not to bustle

  • It depends on the lenghth of your train and whether you mind the bulk of it and people possibly stepping on it.  There are different types of bustles that all look different.  You can have a seamstress show you your options and how they will look.

  • Do you have a train?  If so, I'd bustle it.  It is so annoying to have people stepping on it or having to hold it all night.  Also if you plan to dance, it is way easier with the dress bustled to keep the train off the floor.
  • I was planning on having a very simple dress with no train and ended up with a court train and a 9 point bustle.

It won't change the shape of the dress from the front, and your seasmstress will work with you to figure out a bustle shape that works with your dress and figure to flatter the back.

Like noodle said if you have a train, it will keep people from stepping on the back of your dress at the reception and keep the hem cleaner since it won't be dragging on the floor all night.

Stay away from the simple button bustle.  Do french or some sort of tie because those buttons pop off easily and you'll spend the whole night holding up your train on one arm as you dance.
  • I did a french bustle with some of the lace (top layer) sweeping the floor and it was stepped on and black by the end of the night, but it looked really pretty in the pictures. If you have a train longer than a sweep on the floor--bustle it!
